In the tale of ‘Beowulf’, Beowulf fights three different monsters. He uses a different method of fighting each monster. Beowulf first fights Grendel, a huge monster that terrifies the land of Herot. He also fight Grendel’s mother, who is seeking revenge for her son’s murder. The third fight Beowulf fought was against a mighty dragon that is mad about being robbed by a thief in Herot. With each fight Beowulf also brought back a trophy with him. With each fight there was a different trophy each time. First off, the fight with Grendel was a greatly gruesome battle. Beowulf fought Grendel’s mom down in the marsh where Grendel and his mother lived. It took hours for Beowulf to get to his destination, but when he finally got there he looked all around for Grendel’s mother that was nowhere in sight. All of a sudden, Beowulf is attacked, but he was still alert and reacted quickly. At this battle he had on a suit of armor and helmet that protected him. Grendel’s mother clawed and tore at Beowulf. She even bit holes in his helmet. Beowulf responded with his sword, and shoved her to the floor; but Grendel’s mother drew a dagger stabbed him unsuccessfully on Beowulf’s mail shirt on his chest. Eventually, Beowulf took his mighty sword one last time, using all his strength, he held it high and penetrated her in the neck and cut it through breaking her bones. Beowulf felt such a rush of excitement seeing her lifeless body on the ground. But still full of anger he looked for Grendel’s body, and when he found it he ripped his head off with his sword. He was accompanied by his fellow warriors and took his sword and shield. Beowulf also wore his protective armor once again. Beowulf was now fifty years older too so he was not as strong as he was in his more glory days. Once they got to the dragon’s hoard Beowulf could feel the heat of the dragon, and called out a battle cry. They all went in and Beowulf dodged the flames of the dragon with his shield, but it soon started to melt. Then, he tries to stab the dragon but failed. With glory against him, the sword broke and simply got to poke the dragon. It did hurt the dragon a little and it turned towards Beowulf and blew flames everywhere. Beowulf was practically facing his death, and to top it off his men all cowardly ran out in fear. All but one stayed back, Wiglaf, and together they killed the dragon. Wiglaf searches the dragons’ cave and find priceless jewels and gold. When they arrived to Herot with the treasure as their trophy, Beowulf was still not looking so good.
