Walter M. Kinbrough, president of Dillard University, believes that “College, primarily providing an intellectual foundation for a chosen profession, is still a great place to make lifelong friends, meet a spouse, develop professional networks, and discover mentors. It facilitates intellectual, professional, and personal collisions, all of which have value.” Similarly, the purpose of college in the 2013 Disney Pixar movie Monsters University, is to provide a place for personal and intellectual growth, preparing students for success in their future. Sullivan, or Sulley, enters college as an inattentive and ignorant student. He shows a lack of motivation and focus which is unsuitable for a college environment. On his first day of class, after arriving late, Sulley sits down and asks the kid sitting next to him “Hey bub. Could I borrow a pencil? I forgot all my stuff.” He then sits back and picks at his teeth with the pencil as shown in figure 1. Immediately from his introduction, Sulley’s work ethics are revealed, showing an uninspired and irresolute student. Later that same night, during a conversation with Mike Wazowski, he tells Mike “Pssh, you don’t need to study scaring, you just do it.” Sulley greatly overlooks studying and believes he does not need to work hard to succeed. Before being exposed to Monsters University, Sulley had low academic aspirations and was on track for failure. Sulley’s intellect and personality grew for the better. He learned to work hard and study and he made great friends as exemplified in figure 3. Sulley was able to get his dream job of being a scarer at Monsters Incorporated and have his best friend Mike Wazowski by his side as shown in figure 4.
