Fahrenheit 451 Essay
In our society Firemen are supposed to be heroic and put out fires. That was not what being a fireman meant for Montag. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 for Montag being a firefighter possessed a level of respect and confidence, that was hard to earn for the average person. The numbers 451 symbolize the burning of books and the law that forbids books. When the government bans reading it eliminates excessive thinking and imagination. Taking that away can drive some people insane; like when people are told they can’t do something, then it creates a drive to do that to prove that limitations can’t limit them. At first Clarisse asks, “Do you ever read any of the books you burn?” Laughing, he replies “That's against the law!” Later in the book he reveals that he owns a stash of books. He also steals a book from a house they're burning down. “We never burned right…” (Bradbury 12). Consequently, he takes a flamethrower and starts burning Beatty all of his co-workers stare at him in a daze not wanting to believe what’s unfolding before their eyes. Montag is trying to make a point of taking out the head firefighter. He wants people to know that thinking outside the box isn't an atrocious act and it never was. As you can see, many people helped to change Montag's beliefs and actions. Now you know who Guy Montag was at the start of the novel, people who pushed Montag to change, and how his thoughts shifted. Montag was married and thought his life was perfect until he started reflecting on it. Books gave him a new perspective on life. They made Montag look for a new way to do things.
