Niter isn’t the only thing unpleasant in the catacombs. It is very disturbing to think that a person could kill another in such a cruel way. Being changed to a wall and enclosed in brick is just an awful way to go. Though, a man did think that it was the best way to get his revenge. Through his hateful nature, Montresor drives the story’s theme of revenge, betrayal, and spite.
In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, Montresor is shown as hateful, vengeful, and smart. Montresor is shown to be hateful in the story when he describes that his smile is because he’s thinking of Fortunato’s death.“I continued, as was my want to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation”(Poe 372). He introduces this theme early on in the story. He does this when he talks about his hatred of Fortunato, and when he foreshadows the murder of of said man. The theme of the story can be seen through Montresor's actions and his words. He continues to act friendly towards Fortunato despite the fact that he insulted him. He plots his every move in the catacombs. He was so filled with spite, that he felt like murder was the only way to avenge his family’s name. It is unfortunate that he thought that the best way to do it. Montresor builds up his betrayal of Fortunato from early on. The way the he fakes their friendship, and the way he continually gives Fortunato wine is just a part of his plan of betrayal. He even showes Fortunato the very trowel that would incase him in brick. Montresor betrayed Fortunato in one of the cruelest ways possible. Fortunato was not the slightest bit suspicious of his dear friend.
