Montresor in Edgar Allen Poe's "Cask of Amontillado" is a complex character who goes crazy with revenge so his heart wouldn't be ill for simple reasons. For all the trouble he went through to kill Fortunato he could be satisfied with just starving in a wall. He is Also to proud to admit his heart feeling ill after killing. Montesors heart was ill because Fortunato didn't suffer enough being in the wall and starving to death. Monstresor throughout the story goes crazy with revenge and couldn't be satisfied with with what he did to Fortunato. Toward the end of the story Montresor calls and yells for Fortunato twice after ceiling him up in the wall(5). He offered him the wine to get his hopes up so when he died it would more surprised and be that much worse worse for him. Also being down in the crypts horrified Fortunato with all the bones and human remains which added to suffering right before he died by making him worry and scared but know it's all worth it because of the delicious wine that he thinks he will be able taste, but instead is just be trapped and starves to death regretting ever thinking about the wine in the cellar. Montresor has way too much pride to show regret for killing someone. After the throwing of the torch Montresor walks away and says, "My heart grew sick--on account of th dampness of the catacombs."(5). The fact that he would even say this shows that he is disappointed with the kill. His family crest shows his family is a proud one and wouldn't admit feeling sympathy for some who insulted them like Forunato. This means that he had to have meant something else like he wants Fortunato to suffer more for what he did; he also wouldn't have mentioned this if it wasn't important so it couldn't be something as simple as the smell."I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within."(5). Throwing the torch isn't planned because he did it last minute and would have to either get a new torch or walk in the dark, so he might have done it due to Forunato’s unexpected silence.
