when it comes to text and music, tone plays a big role. Tone is how we decipher these things, tone is essential to its overall meaning. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the artist SZA's music both carry the tone of a person going through manic behavior. Both their motifs can be depicted as madness. First, in SZA's song “Normal girl” she sings about wanting to be the typical girlfriend. She states, “I'll be probably, I'll be proud like, I'll be probably a problem” In this quote she is acknowledging how difficult she is towards her significant other. Hamlet could relate to this quote because he was indeed the issue in the relationship. This can be described as manic behavior AKA Madness. We know Hamlet is also going through this mental state, as he is grieving all alone and handling his mothers new marriage.Secondly, SZA sings about how she “Rather be in jail than alone.” I feel like this is the second best relatable quote to Hamlet. Every action he’s considering to take for revenge can lead to him in jail. After all the grief he's handling right now, he can’t see himself staying alive unless he gets his revenge.Furthermore, SZA and Hamlet are both giving off a frantic tone and a motif of madness. They seem to be losing it, preferring to lose their freedom rather than let reality be.In her song “Good Days' ' , The artist SZA wrote “I've been on my empty mind stuff I try to keep from losin' the rest of me”. This part of the song can be explained as SZA going through a breakup and not taking it well at all. She’s been in her head a lot and is trying to keep herself sane.
