Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is seen as a book embedded into the American public school education system with good reasons. To Kill a Mockingbird symbolizes innocence, classism, and racism. We look through all of these statements from an 8 year old girl nicknamed Scout as she grows up during the Great Deppression, When Scout was around 7 years old, a trial shook the little town of Maycomb when a 19 year old girl accused a black man named Tom Robinson of raping her. Being set in the 1930’s when segregation was a prominent factor in America, With little evidence and witnesses Tom Robinson was still found guilty and was sentenced to death by electrocution.
6/24, Chapter One: As the book begins, the readers are introduced to Scout, and her knowledge of Maycomb. I noticed how Scout’s narration sounded; she is telling the story as an adult but from a five year old’s point of view during the book, but her narrative included complex words such as “imprudent” (5) and “domiciled” (10), which is unlike what a child would say. Harper Lee uses the unique narration so that Scout would be able to provide background and context to Maycomb, but also so that readers would be able to see how Scout reacted and felt about the events in the book, and how it impacted her life growing up. Scout also used description and imagery as she told the story, which I found intriguing, since children don’t usually care for description and see things simplistically.

As Jem grows, he learns how bad society is and that not everyone is perfect. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men.

Atticus says this because he does not want Scout to harm them since the mockingbirds have not done anything to Scout. This lesson also applies to people because if people have not harmed anyone Atticus believes that they should be kindly and with respect. Atticus believes that teaching his kids to have good morals is important, like in this situation.
Morality is something that everyone has, and it is important to one’s everyday life. It helps one to grow as a person and leaves an impression on every person one will meet. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, multiple characters learn lessons that affect their morality throughout the story as they experience new things. In the novel Scout and Jem learn about having respect for everyone from Atticus’ actions, Scout and Jem also learn that they have to be able to relate to someone before they can fully understand them, and they learn to never follow the crowd and to not let others people’s opinions influence them because Atticus did so himself.
