Morocco is located in Northern Africa bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea between Algeria and Western Sahara. It is one of the gateways to Africa. Morocco has a tension between the Europeans and the Muslims.
In 788, Morocco Muslim dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 1500s, Ahmad al-Mansur, got rid of foreign invaders and started a Golden Age, which is period when a society develops to their highest point. After the early Islamic period, Berber dynasties arose, concerning the Western Mediterranean region including Southern Spain and Portugal. The takeover began 50 years of trade competition in the European countries for Morocco’s products. In 1912, the French took control over the country. A long independence struggle with France ended in 1956. Morocco has been independent ever since then. In 1957, Sultan Mohammed V organized a new state as a monarchy and became the king. Since Spain’s withdrawal from Western Sahara in 1976, Morocco had extended its control to about 80% of the territory. In 2011, citizens had a lot of protest because they wanted a more democratic government. The king responded by including a new constitution in a reform program. The Sahara Desert makes up most of the Southern half of Morocco’s landscape. The Atlas mountains serve as the northern-western border of the deserts. The Atlas mountains stretch out eastwards from the Atlantic ocean to the Sahara desert.
Morocco is the 71st largest export country in the world. One of Morocco’s main extractive industries are mining. The strongest point of Morocco’s mining industry is mining phosphate. Phosphate is used in fertilizer and rechargeable batteries, but it also occurs naturally. Phosphate is made from phosphorous.
In Morocco, they export 1.5 billion dollars worth of phosphate. Morocco mostly exports phosphate to India and Pakistan.
There are four main phosphate mines located in Morocco. They are Khouribga, Benguerir, Marrakech, and Laayoune. The company that operates the mining is called Office Chérifien des Phosphates. It is owned by the government. Morocco owns half of the phosphate that hasn’t been mined yet in the whole world. Morocco exports to Spain, France, Brazil, US, Belgium, and Italy. Morocco has been mining phosphate for over 90 years. Morocco is the world’s largest exporter of phosphate. The company is located in Morocco and it’s owned by the government.
