Television programming continues to be a growing industry and a growing influence on kids today. Children are watching television at younger and younger ages and the amount each kid watches continues to grow. With television becoming one of the most influential factors in a kid’s development, isn’t it important to monitor what your child is watching? Gender and racial stereotypes are almost always present in every source of entertainment. This could be a negative impact of kid programs because kids are not old enough to differentiate need from want. I choose to analyze the shows Scooby-Doo, Rugrats, and Elena of Avalor. I chose these in particular because they all show some sort of stereotype and can affect how a child’s personality develops. Starting off with Scooby-Doo, Scooby- DOo was created in 2002 and its target audience was for 8 and older. The basic plot of the show was a group of teenagers and a dog figuring out mysteries and saving the town. As soon as I was introduced to the characters, the stereotypes were obvious. Fred was the tall, blond boy who was not the brightest, but definitely good-looking and gets and the girls. This is a clear stereotype because Fred was created to be a blond and popular and the stereotype is that blonds/jocks are not very bright. Another is with the two female leads, Velma and Daphne. Rugrats in summary, is about a family and in particular, the babies and the adventures they go through in everyday life. Noticeably is that caucasian was the primary race in the show. This show shows many negative behaviors, but it also does show the negative consequences that come along with these actions. Aggression is a focal point in this show, as Angelica the oldest kid in the show physically and emotionally bullies the younger kids. Angelica throughout the series is consider to be the “villain” and she gets isolated. By Angelica doing mean things to the younger ones and getting punished by parents it shows the viewers how to socially act with positive behavior and how not to socially act with others. I also noticed in the episode that I watched that the parent characters had some sarcasm in the way that they talked that I do not think kids would understand. Rugrats shows important life lessons of greed, addiction, and sharing in a very simplistic way that can cognitively shape kids minds to become aware of these concepts. RUgrats is a fairly aggressive show, but it does show important lessons for children to learn so I think 6 and older would be a more appropriate age range. As for advertisements for this show, I would say they were for slightly old kids. This could be possibly because it was being aired on Nickelodeon and it is showing their tween and teen programs they have. There was
