“The Most Dangerous Game” is about Rainsford, who believes that the world is only made up of hunters and the hunted. The story begins with Rainsford talking to another man, Whitney, aboard a yacht sailing towards Rio, where they will hunt jaguar. While Whitney is slightly sympathetic to the animals, Rainsford is not. Both have noticed that the crew aboard their yacht is very tense today. This is because they are nearing “Ship Trap” island, a very evil place where ships often crash. Whitney turns in while Rainsford stays up to smoke his pipe. This is revealed through Rainsford and Zaroff’s thoughts. Rainsford is a “forward thinker” in the least. He believes that the world is only made up of the hunter and the hunted. Zaroff shares the same perspective to some degree. He believes the he is the one and only hunter and the rest of the world is put there as his “game”. To quote Zaroff directly; “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if need be, taken by the strong.” Rainsford and Zaroff both believe that animals are put on the earth to be hunted, eaten, and mounted nothing more. The two me are very much extremists at heart. Throughout the course of the story it is found that both General Zaroff and Rainsford are both of high standing in the British community, Rainsford for being a renowned author of hunting, and Zaroff for being a general in the British Armed Forces. Both men appear to have been raised in high society, but Rainsford appears to be a socialite with lots of friends and Zaroff appears to be a recluse with only his staff as companions. This is evident because when Rainsford first speaks he is speaking jovially to his hunting companion. Zaroff speaks only to Rainsford and his staff. The actuality that both men are of high standing but Zaroff is a recluse seems like a mystery until he reveals his true motive for living on the island.
