Shakespeare, or better known as the master of poetry and a outstanding writer. Even in his numerous plays he used used poetry. All of the lines either rymed or had a certain type of poetry matched with them. Shakespeare would not only write his entire play poetically, he also used motifs. Two of the motifs that William Shakespeare used in his classic play Romeo and Juliet, were celestial motifs and light versus dark motifs. This motif stood for dark trying to conquer light but only making more because the families end up having to love each other in the end. At the end of Romeo and Juliet’s honeymoon Romeo tells Juliet that the “More light and light: more dark and dark our woes” (3.5.36). Shakespeare uses this detain to tell the audience that the more Romeo and Juliet’s love grows, the more darkness will come for it. He uses this specific quotation to support his purpose by explaining that by the end of this play the hat for the two families will make Romeo and Juliet die. Light versus Dark motifs are also used to describe Romeo’s love for Juliet and her beauty. Like when Romeo first sees Juliet he says that Juliet stands out as beautiful “as a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear” (1.5.53). The writer tells the audience his purpose by saying Romeo has eyes only for Juliet. Shakespeare shows the audience that Juliet stands out and is bright while everything has a dull color, which shows his purpose that Juliet and Romeo must be together. Another example of this type of purpose happens when Romeo sees Juliet on the balcony again he describes Juliet as “the sun” that can “kill the envious moon” (2.2.3). This means Shakespeare’s purpose of this quotation is that Romeo and Juliet’s love will kill the darkness between their two families. His two purposes of light and dark both tie together to show that Romeo and Juliet’s love will overcome the darkness and create happiness between the two
