The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is a compelling book about the abundance of man power that the country abruptly constructed with the Chicago World Fair of 1893. The Chicago World Fair portrayed human ingenuity with electricity, and steel with the beginning works of the Ferris wheel that would create amusement parks that are known today. The Devil in the White City creates the vision that anything was possible in this time. Doctor Holmes plays a role as a villain in The Devil in the White City by creating a business that would create a heaping amount of debt that he is not willing to pay off and murdering many of the people he would become in contact with thus by further expressing the human ingenuity of success he had from his unwillingness
In the story “The Devil and Tom Walker” Irving is warning people to not be greedy and to not fall into temptation. In the book Tom is very greedy and miserly and later sells his soul to the devil. “Tom’s eagerness to the quick, and prepared him to agree to anything rather than not gain the promised treasure” (Miller 328). Tom really wants to get the treasure and is willing to do anything the devil wants to get it because he just wants wealth and material things. “He thought with regret on the bargain he had made with his black friend” (Miller 330).
The non fiction novel, “The Devil in the White City”, is filled with twists and turns as author Eric Larson compares the lives of two men thought to be living two entirely different lives. Chicago’s World Fair, in remembrance of the landing of Columbus in America, is a major aspect in the lives of both men, named H.H Holmes and Daniel Burnham. In this specific passage, however, the literary element of symbolism is applied and very well so. The illuminations lighting up the city symbolizes positivity. With European rivals always “one step ahead”, the lights covering Chicago specifically give a sense of hope and America’s potential to be improved.
“The Woods-Devil,” written by Paul Annixter, uses dangers in the wilderness to illustrate Nathan’s motivation. When Nathatn is on a voyage to check the traps in the dangerous wild for his family’s needs, he has double thought of going back home, “Then he thought of what awaithed him at home-that stricken look on his father’s face. His fear of that was greater than his fear of the valley” (21). This illustrates that Nathan does not want to dissapoint his father in this manly task that the whole family is depending on him to do. This reveals that Nathan has a massive quanity of respect for his father.
In the beginning of the story the author talks about many pressures but the most notable is when she joins the Dagger society and she is tested to see which emotions she aligns with best by touching different stones. He has worked or wrote for Bucks County Courier Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, Harper’s and The New Yorker. The events of The Devil in The White City take place during 1893 at the Worlds Colombian Exposition in Chicago. I feel this is a good book and I will probably go back and re read it just to get a better feel for it, I just wish I didn’t wait till the last minute to start reading.
The selling of one’s soul to the devil is caused by one’s goal to obtain something of great value like, fame, fortune and power. Which leads one to getting hurt or losing everything. The story and the movie had various motivations, by dealing with the consequences. Foremost, In Washington Irving's “The Devil and Tom Walker” demonstrates his motivation of greed by dealing with the devil.

The World Exhibition which was meant to be a shining beacon of the modern world to show the advancements of humankind would be tainted by the horrors brought by a depraved man considered to be America's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes. In Erik Larson’s novel “The Devil in the White City’ Larson details the ingenious architecture, science, politics, and gruesome murders of Chicago during the Gilded Age of The United States. Larson paints his picture with vivid and engaging language with incredible use of colors depicting the psychotic blue shown across Holmes's facade and the burning flame in Roots' persistence to plan the World Fair. Larson uses these themes to help the reader understand the changes the world will face as technology advances
It reveals how people commit cruel acts out of selfish intentions. In this situation, the girls claim to “come to Heaven’s side” by pointing fingers at others for witchcraft, although they were only doing so to get themselves out of their own trouble. These acts of cruelty reflect upon the evil motives of the perpetrators that become more common after it is done once, as seen through the continuous trials and suspicions, which acts as one of the most major conflicts in the play. Without these cruel accusations, there would be neither plot nor ending. With this same situation, it can be concluded that accusations become more frequent during an interval of time when there are more people accusing.
In Dante’s Inferno, Dante Alighieri's depiction of Satan at the bottom of hell reveals the theme that in Hell the punishment is always befitting of the due to the fact that the lower you go, the farther that person is from god. The picture of Satan satisfies the reader because he shows that he is the opposite of god and that he is full of evil. Lucifer is the demon in the circles of hell which he has three faces, and bat like wings in which he creates the cold wind where the sinners suffer. “The face in the middle was red, the color of anger. The face on the right was white blended with yellow, the color of impotence.
In Dante’s Inferno, he writes about his journey through hell for the purpose of recognizing his sins. He goes through this journey with Virgil, a voice of reason for Dante. Dante meets people through his journey of the many circles in the Inferno that lead him down into the center of hell, where Satan is. Satan is seen as being monster-like with three heads, representing a mocking of the Trinity and blowing his wings around the cocytus river. The final thing seen here is the fact that Dante’s description of Satan is a bit disappointing compared to the other descriptions he has written about the inferno.

It can be foreshadowed that Lady Macbeth's ego would attack her as she always taunts Macbeth into doing the dirty work and does not do it herself. Furthermore, her sleepwalking represents her unconscious mind.
As soon as she heard Macbeth’s prophecy, she was willing to do anything to get him into the position of king. She was even willing to aid in the murder of innocent people who stood in the way of Macbeth’s ascension to the crown like, King Duncan. Her greed led to Macbeth’s downfall. When Macbeth stated that he was questioning his intentions to kill the king, she pushed him and assisted in the plotting. “We will proceed no further in this business. /
