One very important activist in our history was Cesar Chavez who, along with Harriet Tubman, stood up for human rights. Cesar Chavez wanted to change the fact that field workers were being mistreated, and they didn’t have their rights as a “normal person” would.
Many people was inspired by Tubman’s daring journey. She reached for what she was dreaming for so long but it wasn’t enough for her. She wants her family with her and that’s when she started freeing slaves from South to North. Many people was inspired by her actions.

The Underground Railroad was not “underground” and it wasn’t actually a “railroad.” The reason it was called “underground” was because of how secretive it had to be and it was called a “railroad” because it was an evolving form of transportation.
On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced that the face of the anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman will be on a new $20 bill. This news came due to a large national effort by “women on 20s” who advocated for a woman to be on the $20 to celebrate 100 years of the 19th amendment, ratified in 1920, that gave women the right to vote. This is a historic decision by the Treasure Secretary as this will be the first time in over a half-century that a woman will be featured on the US currency, and there has never been an African-American on paper money, and it’s time for an African-American woman to hold center stage. Replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 seems to be the decision the general population agrees with even though last year the Treasury Department proposed changing

One of the heroic women of the 1800s was someone named Elizabeth Jennings Graham, from 1830-1901. Elizabeth Jennings was a New York schoolteacher whose 1854 defiance of a streetcar conductors orders to leave his car helped desecrates public transit in New York City. Another person was Fredrick Douglass. Fredrick Douglass was an African American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.
Harriet Tubman was a woman who changed the course of history by fighting against slavery throughout her entire life. Most modern-day individuals know her for conducting the Underground Railroad and helping hundreds of enslaved people escape from their captors. She went on several perilous journeys to southern plantations despite the heavy reward sum that plantation owners eventually placed on her head. Her courage and readiness to risk her own capture allowed many to live better lives in the North. However, conducting the Underground Railroad was not the only way she contributed to the abolition of slavery.
Frederick Douglass once stated, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” This simple yet profound statement is relevant to countless scenarios in life. For Douglass, this quote is a direct reflection of his time as a slave. Without the challenges of slavery, he never would have progressed into a famous writer and orator. Frederick Douglass’ words can also be applied to Jhumpa Lahiri in her literary work, “Trading Stories.”
When we talk about slavery, many historical names come to mind, the biggest being President Lincoln. Although Lincoln was against slavery, it proved to be a long road ahead before his emancipation proclamation was issued. Lincoln was not the first to confront issues of slavery in the United States. It took a seamlessly long time before words were spoken that could even begin to abolish slavery slowly. Blood was soon shed to stop this inhumane way of life, but at what cost?

Benjamin Ross and Harriet Greene were her parents, and lived on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. Harriet was put to work by the age of five, and served as a maid and children’s nurse. At the age of six Araminta was taken from her parents to live with James Cook, whose wife was a weaver, to learn the skills of weaving.
