From Krakauer’s letter to the reader, we have a basic understanding of his immense personal grief as the result of a tragedy on Mount Everest and the reason for writing the book. Then instead of jumping right into the narrative from the very beginning, Krakauer starts in the middle– the time and day when he reached the peak of Mount Everest and returned, and how eight others couldn’t do the same. This interlude first shocked me but also prepared me for what was to come. Most are unaware of what occurs at Mount Everest but this book awakens those who are oblivious, including myself. The book was incredibly informative, starting right from the beginning when the author gives the complete history of those attempting to reach the top of the world.
"Everest: To Climb or Not to Climb" is an article by Kelli Stynton that explains why climbing Mount Everest is a massive risk and questions the future fate of the mountain as a tourist attraction. In the article, Stynton presents the idea of whether Everest should remain open for climbers to scale or whether it should be shut down because of the constant loss of human life on the mountain. She uses two specific paragraphs in the section "Closing Time." to contrast the advantages and disadvantages of keeping Mount Everest open to climbers without choosing a side in this debate. Paragraph 16 of the article primarily describes why Mount Everest should be kept open to climbers.
After being subjected to the many risky features, climbers continue to ascend Everest. Many question why clients would ever want to climb with such risks, but they say the need is too strong. They ignore their logical thoughts about turning back, and are adamant about reaching the top. Clients shouldn’t continue climbing Everest if there is a risk of death.
The author remembers, “None of them imagined that a horrible ordeal was drawing nigh. Nobody suspected that by the end of that long day, every minute would matter” (Krakauer 9). The events which occurred on top of Mount Everest that fateful night in 1996 shocked the world. However, the world failed to acknowledge the pain these events left the actual members of the various expeditions in. These unfortunate souls, like Jon Krakauer, were left to wonder what they did wrong to cause the deaths of eight innocent people.
Picture yourself on top of the highest mountain in the world, you are feeling euphoric and elated you were able to make it this far. Now, imagine that you see bad weather coming your way and getting back down could be a matter of life and death. This exact situation was stricken upon author Jon Krakauer, who would write about his experiences in the book Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster, which was published in 1997; with a postscript authored in 1999. The paperback is a first-hand account of Krakauer’s journey to Everest as a journalist.
Imagine having to put your life in the hands of someone you just met. In the book “Into Thin Air” written by Jon Krakauer, Jon writes about his story of the disaster that occurred on Mt. Everest the day of May 10, 1996. On this expedition, Jon’s life was put in the the hands of Rob Hall, his expedition leader, a day before he started his ascent to the summit. Paying thousands of dollars to Hall, Jon relied on Hall to make the right decisions on Everest to keep him safe. While this was the case in the end for Jon, it wasn’t the same for five of his fellow climbers.
Krakauer explains how following the discovery of Everest as the highest mountain in the world, the journey to the top would take the lives of 24 men, the efforts of 15 expeditions and the passage of 101 years before someone would finally reach the summit. This demonstrates how all though the expedition to the top was not easy, and would require the lives of many men, people would not stop trying because that is human nature. Not all people climb Mt. Everest in their lifetime, but most people, if not all, work hard to achieve something or be successful. Whether that success may be in their professional life, their personal life, or anything else, Mt. Everest can symbolize all of it. It symbolizes a journey to success and relates to the theme of humans natural drive and passion to pursue what they want.
Being so high up can cause there to not be enough oxygen for your body and can kill your brain cells. Preparation for climbing takes several months. You can not just immediately climb Everest, you have to progress by climbing smaller mountains and then working your way up. When a person thinks they are ready to climb Mt. Everest I think that the guides at base camp should decide whether or not they are ready to attempt such a big mountain using some kind of physical test. Personally, I would never want to attempt to climb Everest.
For as long as anyone can remember, people have dreamed of reaching the summit of Mt. Everest. During May of 1996, an expedition set out to Nepal to attempt a climb up Mt. Everest. By the end of this expedition to the top of Everest, many climbers lost their lives due to the brutal weather. In Jon Krakauer’s novel Into Thin Air, he takes readers through the story of the expedition, and he talks about the climbers who died. Among the list of the dead was a man named Doug Hansen.
Jon Krakeuer never thought he’d climb to the top of Mount Everest. He gave up mountain climbing several years before but this was an opportunity of a lifetime and that had changed his life ever since. Although he was only supposed to stay at base camp to write for “Outside Magazine”, the thought of actually climbing to the top would be one of the greatest achievements he’s ever achieved and he wanted to challenge himself against this almighty mountain. He never envisioned himself making that final step to the top and being recognized as one of the greats who has conquered this 29,028 ft mountain, would just be mind-blowing. Now, in the modern age, Mount Everest is seen as a profit. For example, on April of 2014, there was an accident on Mount Everest. At around 6:30 A.M. a chunk of ice broke off a glacier and as it fell it created an avalanche on the mountain's south side (Barry). It trampled about 30 men while 13 bodies were found and three were still missing (Barry). No foreigners died during this avalanche since most of them were still sleeping.
Many things could go wrong climbing the highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 29,029 ft. 12 people died climbing Mount Everest. No is responsible for those death. The climbers had chosen to climb the mountain. In the novel it states, “Hall was charging $65,000 a head to guide clients to the top of the world” (Krakauer 35). This shows that a person is willing to pay to go through so much pain, risk and sickness to summit the top of the world.
The first attempt and success to climb Mt. Everest occured in 1953. Since then, almost 4,000 people have been able to scale the mountain, but over 230 people have not been able to climb it successfully. There is a chance of accident or death when climbing this mountain or any dangerous activity. All people should should have the right to rescue services even if they knowingly put themselves at risk because there is always a chance of an accident happening, rangers are there to save people in danger, and there are rescue vehicles being produced to be used in case of an emergency.
In my opinion i do not think they should close it, and i'm going to tell you why they shouldn't close mount Everest From my point of view I think Mount Everest should stay open, because it's an adventure for some people or an adrenaline rush for others it different for everyone,but people want to climb it or wish they can climb it. Some women do not get this experience, because they decide to have an abortion instead. Abortion is where a mother kills the fetus inside of her womb. Abortion should be forbidden because it can be dangerous and there are other ways that someone could go about having that baby, like adoption.
