The new hit television show based on the comic book series, The Walking Dead written by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, started back in 2010 and debuted at 5.4 million views. In 2014, the premier of season five netted unprecedented 17.3 million viewers. This program has multiple genres that include drama, science fiction, fantasy, romance and suspense. AMC has brought 21st century audiences one of the most enthralling television program of our generation. Although a zombie apocalypse is unrealistic, storylines and characters of The Walking Dead set the show apart from other basic cable dramas. As Shane’s leadership role changes, he starts to loath Rick. Shane’s character also suffers tremendous pain and loss. His love of his life goes back with her husband Rick, his place as leader is completely overruled, and the constant dishonesty with himself. Shane’s concept of guilt and moral correctness is deceased. Thus making him a dangerous person for the group. For everyone’s safety, including himself, Rick has no other choice but to execute Shane. Carol Peletier, portrayed by Melissa McBride, was first shown as an obedient wife and mother. Throughout the series the character Carol personality and way of thinking changes due to her various complications she is put through. Within the first season of the program Carol loses her abusive husband to a walker, left to fend for her daughter. As the show continues Carol’s daughter, Sofia disappears. A world being overrun by zombies having little to no survivors, thanks to scientists making a worldwide virus, is unrealistic. Some people do not fancy the program because of its violent content. The constant struggle for survival, making complex decisions, and the show containing blood and weapons repulses people. For others the continual pain and suffering of the characters is too much. Other reasons why people may not enjoy the show is because of how the characters conduct themselves: kill and survive that’s it. In this show, some characters are portrayed as fearless, brutal, troublesome, and are going completely out of their minds. These characters will do whatever is necessary, leaving their morals behind them without even realizing it. Even though this is all true, people that have this mind set, do not give the show a chance. In order for those that believe the show is a controversial program, they need to get past their comfort zone and actually see what they are missing out. Looking past the violence and it being unrealistic the show is fantastic. Its storylines and characters are what make The Walking Dead so captivating.
