ATLAS SHRUGGED ESSAY If our economy has become so bad that gas is $30 a gallon, would you be happy with the government setting regulations on the large companies that we would rely on? I believe that the antagonists of the movie is the government. In the movie, the government is trying to make the economy better by making new laws and setting regulations, but this is just making the economy worse. Even though Dagny and Hank are being selfish, they are still helping the economy. Because of the demand of travel through trains, Dagny and Hank are depended on because of the corporations they own. But the government doesn't like that Hank and many others own monopolies and sets regulations trying to make everything more fair, but actually making everything worse. When Hank refuses to give his patents to the government , he is supposed to get ten years in jail. But the people rely on hank, so he doesn't get arrested because they don’t want to turn him into a martyr and they need his steel. Government activities can have a powerful effect on the economy. They have a huge part in the stabilization and growth in our economy. By adjusting fiscal and monetary policy, they can slow down or speed up the economy’s rate of growth, which could later affect the prices and employment in our nation. The prices of basic necessities such as water and gas rise dramatically because of the sudden change in supply and demand. That is what happened in the movie. After all the oil spills, demand went up, but supply went down, so the prices for gas soared, thus making trains and other forms of cheap travel essential.
