Awakenings is based on a book with the same title written by Oliver Sacks. It is about a true to life event that occurred in the late 1960s in the Bronx, New York. The movie was directed by Penny Marshall and the screenplay is by Steven Zaillian. The film was released on December 22, 1990. Robin Williams played the role of Dr. Malcolm Sayer and Robert De Niro played the role of Leonard Lowe, two of the main characters in the movie. The film is about a doctor looking for a cure for patients who survivors of an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. The movie is a drama and biographical film. All the actors delivered the side effects well. However, the one who stood out the most was Robert De Niro for his exceptional acting. It’s not so easy acting to have spasms and to be immobilized for a certain period of time and all. Special mention to Robin Williams as well for a job well done. No one, to me, did any bad acting. Every part of the movie was enjoyable, not a dull moment. The scene that really stuck to me was the night when Dr. Sayer woke up after giving Leonard a large dose of L-Dopa and seeing him coloring on a desk and the part when Leonard was telling Dr. Sayer the people should be reminded how to feel alive and to enjoy life. There was not a part in movie that I did not like. The lesson I learned from the story is that you do not know what you have until you have lost it. In other words you do not know how to appreciate something until it is gone. Other people will learn to appreciate the simplest thing and enjoy and live life to the fullest after watching the movie.
