Moving to Ajax, Ontario
In November 2016, I left my home and friends in Calgary to move to Ajax, which shaped who I am today. When I moved, I had to learn how to say goodbye, how to move into a new environment, and take years to adapt to that new environment. Firstly, when I had to learn how to say goodbye, it did not only affect me but my family as well. In October 2016, my family said we were moving to Ajax to be closer to my family and to get a better financial state (as my parents worked three jobs). As someone who moved cities and countries often, I was disappointed as I started to make new friends at my school. When I found out, I began to hang out with my friends often by going to their houses and spending time with them before I left.

My parents had to say goodbye to their friends and co-workers at their jobs, which they enjoyed very much. Despite the change having a lasting effect on my life for a month, it was not a long-lasting change as we soon left Calgary to move to my grandparents' house in Ajax. Lastly, compared to Calgary, Ajax is a highly diverse city. When I moved there in November 2016, I realized how many people of my culture there were. I was overwhelmed at first, not knowing much about my culture. It caused me to get bullied by my peers for not being fluent in my home language, Arabic. I could not help as my family was busy finding a house and jobs. This period was significant as I learned how to deal with my bullies, which aided me today. When I moved to Ajax, the change was long-lasting as I had to take years to adapt to the new environment. My parents quickly adapted. However, as I had to learn to fit in with the trends in my school, how to deal with new types of people and bullies on my own, and how to find myself, I was the only one affected. After moving, the causes of moving cities to be closer to my family, my parents getting better jobs than they did in Calgary, and the change from an all-white environment to a more diverse one all shaped me. Firstly, a crucial cause of moving was to be closer to my family. As I only had my parents and little brother in Calgary, I was not as connected with my extended family members. However, moving caused me to connect with them more, which also helped me feel that I had more people who could be there to support me. Secondly, when living in Calgary, my parents worked three jobs with low pay, meaning I had to stay in daycare most of the time. When we moved to Ajax, my parents found jobs that paid more, helping them be home more often. I became able to stay home more often. It helped me focus on school and myself more when in Calgary, I could not. The consequences of these causes made me feel more secure in myself, my home, and my life. Lastly, when I changed from an all-white environment to a more diverse environment, I learned how to embrace my ethnicity and culture. I had grown up in all-white areas all my life, causing me to be ashamed of my background. When my family moved, I became exposed to people of all different backgrounds. When moving, I found people of the same culture as me, which resulted in learning about it and feeling comfortable expressing it. In brief, after
