The people who wanted to find a better life and wanted to find better land are probably the people who want to move west. These people are probably the types of people who want to explore and find new things. These people probably faced a lot of challenges while moving west. One challenge would be bad weather. it would not be easy to travel in a storm. Or if they ran into rugged mountains it would be hard to get past them. The Mountain Men trap beavers for pelts, or hides. The miners travel west to become rich in finding gold, but most of them never “struck it rich”. some of the reasons are the soil in the east is thin and overworked. Traveling west is a good opportunity to find new and rich farmland. Most people did not have enough money to buy farmland in the east. The settlers found it easier to get land in the west. The fertile rich soil helped the farmers that moved west to be successful. Traveling west the farmers faced starvation and cold. They faced bad weather too. They also had to get past rugged mountains. These obstacles are similar to the obstacles of the mountain men and the Forty niners they all faced starvation and dehydration and cold. The Mountain Men moved west to trap animals for their fur. In the early nineteenth century the demand for fur was high. There was a big fashion in fur hats. The plentiful amount of beavers and other animals with fur allowed the Mountain men to be successful. The dangers that the Mountain Men faced was starvation, dehydration, cold weather, indians and wild animals. The miners moved west because of the California Gold Rush. They traveled west to "strike it rich". James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill near the city of Coloma.
