Lily D’Elia Ms. Lee ENG1D1-07 8 June, 2023 Feminism Making a Difference in Society Moxie girls unapologetically tackle the controversial topic of feminism in their school, and inspire the readers to do the same. This was displayed in the book Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu, which took place in a small town in Texas called East Rockport. In the book, the girls experience severe sexism from the school staff, and football boys at school. Particularly one boy, Mitchel Wilson, captain of the football team, whose father happens to be the principal at their school. Many of the girls did not agree with the unfair treatment they received at school, but were too scared to speak up for themselves. Firstly, many girls coming together as a group is more powerful than one girl on her own. In the book, there are many ways that the author displayed the power of many working together. One piece of evidence was in chapter 13 page 166-169 when many girls came together to raise money for the girls soccer team in the form of a bake sale. Once many of the girls participated in the bake sale, by both baking and purchasing baked goods, over 100 dollars was raised. This gave the students the chance to fund new jerseys for the team. Although Principal Wilson attempted to shut down and ban moxie clubs, the girls were resilient, and did not give up after one fail.Next to continue, The Moxie zines made a huge difference all across East Rockport high “Moxie Girls Fight Back! Has become more than just a club. It's a movement. It's a call to action. It's a way to say that we matter too” (Mathieu 255). Once the girls realized how big of a difference they made across the school. The movement was so successful that they got so many girls, and even some guys to participate. Apart from this, In chapter 23, page 310, Lucy created a blog where she posted and shared pictures following the school walkout which was organized by Emma Cunningham. She informed people what goes on at East Rockport. This blog quickly became viral, and people from all around America saw it. This was able to spread enough awareness that it reached the school board. Once the school board found out about this, the girls finally got the justice that they deserved. Principal Wilson was fired, and all the teachers who stood by him left as well. This finally gave the girls a chance to feel comfortable in their school
