There was not a single variable that influenced mozart’s choice of Le Marriage de Figaro on which to base his opera; rather, a number of factors. Mozart’s ambitions and musicality in opera were influenced by his privileged childhood, which is reflected in all of his operas. The confidence he gained from his travels around Europe may also have been the influence of Mozarts choice to base his opera on a play that had previously been banned in Paris. His career path in opera as a whole however was controlled by the politics of opera in Vienna at the time, and the Italian cabal were wary of his German nationality and exceptional talents. He had been fortunate enough to have his doting father Leopold Mozart as an experienced teacher when he was a child. Leopold taught him everything he knew including playing the violin and clavier, he had great things in mind for Mozart. So much so that he accompanied his son on another trip to Italy in 1769-1771 to show of his sons maturing compositional techniques and performance skills. He had also hoped that these trips would result in a professional appointment for Mozart, unfortunately they did not. However, Mozart was fortunate enough to be in the company of some of the most influential composers of the time in particular Josef Mysliveček and Giovanni Battista Martini whom he met in Bologna. This meeting is of huge importance in Mozart’s later career, as he was accepted as a member of the Accademia Filarmonica, a musical education foundation in Italy and taught by Martini himself. Thus Mozart’s ambitiousness in his choice of opera could be justified by the intense musical education he had throughout his childhood. This musical training opened doors for Mozart and when he returned from his last tour in 1773 he was employed as a musician of the Salzburg court, to the delight of his father.
