Personal Presentation and Style In our meeting, Mr Black impressed as a traditional industrial products representative; he was down to earth, slightly “blokey”, commercially-experienced; he understands both selling direct to customers as well as through distribution. His last role of BOC saw him selling direct to major corporates and achieving double-digit growth of the business in a new product/market area. He states that his next move with BOC would have required him to move into a larger business unit management role based in Sydney. This was unattractive to him and so he looked in the marketplace and found a role with Uvex as a Sales Manager for that manufacturer and marketer of protective eyewear. He had four or five Sales Representatives reporting to him and the business represented directly to major industrial organisations as well as businesses in distribution and transport (Qantas Jetstar etc) but sales were directed through distributors. Atom’s first branch was in Thomastown, and Mr Black was attached to this store with one subordinate, with the brief to grow the sales of the Thomastown branch. He states that over the last few years, Thomastown is grown from zero to $5 million turnover – with a potential of probably $10-$12 million.
