In the book Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, Austen uses many rhetorical techniques to satirize humanity and it’s foolish effects on society. Through two of the main characters proposals, Mr.Darcy and Mr.collin’s, she uses them as satirical figures, in which they both mock young male stereotypes, of wealth and power for marriage. In Mr.Collins's proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, his purpose is to persuade her that marrying him would be the best for both of them. He initiates his proposal by trying to persuade her that marrying him would be doing herself a favour. Mr.Collin’s uses the rhetorical techniques Logos and tone to emphasize his motives for marrying Elizabeth which are selfish and based on other opinions. Through Collin’s persuasive choice of words he states while proposing to Elizabeth that “and thirdly—which perhaps I ought to have mentioned earlier, that it is the particular advice and recommendation of the very noble lady whom I have the honour of calling patroness”(91). In other words Mr. Collin’s reasons for proposing to Elizabeth is because Lady Catherine recommended her and told him to do so. He uses diction here to emphasize his motifs for marrying which are clearly selfish and based on other people’s opinions. The second character that proposed to Elizabeth is Mr.Darcy. In Mr.Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, his purpose is to persuade her that marrying him would be the best for both of them. financially. He states that "But disguise of every sort is my abhorrence. Nor am I ashamed of the feelings I related. They were natural and just”(161). In other words Dacry can no longer hide her feelings for Elizabeth nor does he want to hide it from her any longer. He is willing to love her and marry her regardless of her social class. This shows ethos because it represents Mr.Darcy’s character. He brings himself out of his own character and is willing to profess his feelings and be completely truthful in
