The book is a self-biography about the life and career of Gordie Howe, one of hockey's greatest players. Howe begins his story by reflecting on his childhood in Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada and describes his rise to fame with the Detroit Red Wings. The author’s purpose for writing this book is to acknowledge the greatness that is perceived by many when they refer to Gordie Howe and allow younger generations to understand the impact he had on the game of hockey. Hockey" for his talent and toughness, but a major part of his success was due to the support he received from his wife. Reading this book helped me to see Gordie Howe not only as a hockey player, but as a husband and father. He discusses the challenges of being on the road away from his family. This can be seen in one of the chapters when he reflects on being away “Colleen found herself with a toddler, a new baby, no car and a husband away at training camp.” You can see the love he has for his family when he tells the story of how he was able to play on the same team with both of his sons in the NHL which is truly incredible. Through stories and quotes, I was able to learn about how he had such a great impact on the game and why he is still remembered by many today. One surprising fact I learned from the book is that Gordie Howe played professional hockey for five decades, from the 1940s to the 1980s. He mentions in the book “When I am asked how I was able to play for so long, my answer is always the same, I never stopped loving the game.”This longevity in the sport was particularly interesting to me because it showcases how incredibly talented and dedicated to the game he
