Summary of Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis Bud, Not Buddy is a tender story about an orphaned African American living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression. The main character, Bud, decides to try and find his father. The only clue his mother left him was several flyers about a band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He gets a ride to Grand Rapids, and finds Herman E. Calloway, the man that he believes is his father. He does not get the reception he imagines, and Herman does not believe that Bud is his son.
In Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, many words of the wiser moments occur throughout the story, and shed light on a possible theme. The author shows these moments to introduce the theme of the book from these words of the wiser moments. In the text Killer Kane ( Max’s Dad) says to Max “ You have to be careful, extra careful” while they are walking down old, wooden steps. This piece of text shows a conflict between the main character and another character because Killer Kane doesn't trust Max.
“People cry not because they 're weak. it 's because they 've been strong for too long”-Johnny Depp. This quote relates to the main character of the novel, Bud, Not Buddy, the main character Bud Caldwell is an orphan and a fictional character that lived during the time of the Great Depression; a time where there was a slump in the economy. Bud at the beginning of the book, is shown as a character with a tough exterior, defiant, and pessimistic character, who is “unable” to cry. Bud being toughened by life, is defiant and pessimistic, but after releasing his hurt that he had hidden for a long period, and finding what he longed for, the character of Bud drastically takes a change in his character.
Bud is determined to find Herman E. Calloway because Bud thinks he is his father. Herman is actually his grandfather and now he lives with him. Bud, Not Buddy would be different if less people were homeless because when Bud was at the mission there was a long line, Bud wouldn't have the nickname Sleepy LaBone, Bud would have proper shelter and a bed of his own, and he would have electronics for entertainment
“Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it (author anonymous).” Virtue is defined by Webster Online Dictionary as a conformity to a standard of right, a particular moral excellence. As Christians, we are instructed to stand apart from this dark and ominous world, to be a light in the darkness. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.” The question then becomes, is averting evil enough to generate a virtuous person or must it be an active choice?
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee talks about discrimination based on gender role, age, and skin color. The characters in this book all have different personalities that influences others. Maycomb, Alabama in 1930’s is where everything happened with slavery and struggling with being poor. The characters Scout, Jem, and Dill had a strong bond and had lots of courage. Shows that justice means other things to other people.
The Friendship of George George is a hard working man who relies on mental acuity to get the job. He has a natural leader feel to him because he commands all of the people around him. George is described as small man with dark undertones and strong and slender physical features. Despite his dark facial features, George is a man with a caring attitude and helps whoever needs him. George’s best friend is Lennie depends on him to know what to do and tell him what to do.
In Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd,” Captain the Honorable Edward Fairfax Vere is torn between the desires of personal, moral convictions and the letter of the law. Vere’s difficulties are represented by the decision to hang Billy or forgive him. Furthermore, Melville utilizes various biblical allusions and examples from history to promote his ideology through the character of Captain Vere. Melville introduces the historical background of the story before proceeding to describe life on the Bellipotent.
I believe John Lewis’s hierarchical structure is their main contributor to success therefore I have ranked it first, the reason for this is that different structures shows different things. For example hierarchical structures shows who has the most authority in a business and who has the least amount of authority, this helps them contribute to success because each line of authority are aware of their own targets which contribute to the overall cusses of the company Another reason why is that structures delegate roles to different functions so it shows which function is working at different roles and jobs. This contributes them to success because individual targets and team targets helps the business achieve the main target consequently their
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” This quote is by Thomas Jefferson, by this he means that people with the right mental mindset, to an extent can risk their health to get what they want. But when people don’t have the right mental mindset they may risk their well being just to get what they want. To achieve goals and happiness in life people to an extent may risk their own health, health of others and possibly put their identity on the line.
Although George can be seen as caring to others he may be seen as controlling over what Lennie says and does. In chapter four, George goes off with the other farmhands to have fun and relax while he leaves Lennie alone back at the ranch. When Lennie goes off to pet his pup that Slim, one of the other farmhands, gave him, he sees someone else in the barn so he goes over and starts to talk with the stable buck, Candy.. When George found out what Lennie was talking about with a black guy, he scowled at Lennie and scolded him. " George scowled. "I though I tol ' you not to tell nobody about that."
In 1937 in the midst of The Great Depression, John Steinback published ‘Of Mice and Men’. This story introduced two characters by the name of George and Lennie. The two friends travel across California looking for work. In the book, the author portrays Lennie a huge, strong, and slow learning man. With the authors indirect characterization about Lennie, some critics infer that Lennie is forgetful and never intends to hurt anyone.

Bartleby, from Bartleby the Scrivener, and Willy Loman, from Death of a Salesman, are in many ways opposites. Bartleby is an extreme individualist; only doing what he wants to, no matter the personal or professional cost. On the other hand, Willy Loman is a conformist; he does what he is told, lives an average life, and pursues the “American Dream” like most Americans do. Bartleby and Willy also share similarities: both are physiologically broken and their respective individuality and conformity lead them to their deaths, albeit in different ways. The stories themselves are also similar in that they both critique American society.
The friendship of Buddy and his cousin is a source of refuge , courage and strength for Buddy and his cousin to cope with hard times and accepting the inevitably of their parting. Buddy is the narrator describing the events of his last Christmas with his cousin, best friend before he was set of to military school. At the time of the memory he is seven years old , while as stated his cousin is sixty-something. She is viewed as being his best friend throughout the story, meaning they have a deep relationship. While telling the story, the narrator shows how emotional he felt towards her while growing up, also how they relied on each other.
