In the novel A Hope in the Unseen Cedric Jennings has to fight in order to achieve his dreams of getting into Brown University. Cedric Jennings is a key example of perseverance, fighting against the stigma that his peers establish. At Ballou High School the student life revolves around gang activity, and excludes those who wants to have a successful future. However, in the midst of being an outcast, Cedric has various role models pushing him to go above the standards. Cedric's mother, and teacher, Mr. Taylor influence Cedric and instilled in him the desire to succeed, and strive for “The Hope In the Unseen.” Mr. Taylor is one of Cedrics academic mentors, that helps him persevere in order to succeed in his school life despite all of the judgement he gets. Mr Taylor “has personally invested in Cedrics future” displaying his dedication for Cedrics life (Suskind 6). Having a person care about another, and watching over them, creates a bond. Cedric and Mr. Taylor have such a bond where Cedric feels comfortable with speaking to Mr. Taylor about his feelings, and academic life. Ever since Cedric was born his mother have always valued him, “she invested everything in [Cedric] all her hopes giving their relationship a ferocious intensity”(Suskin 28). This showcases how Cedric's mother believes in him like no other can. Cedric's mother gives him emotional support, so that he can make it academically, and mentally, calling to talk to him while he’s dorming to simply ask him “how it is” helps greatly in times where one may get homesick and is even having some troubles (Suskind 83). This expounds on his mothers emotional support because it shows that she will still be with him even if they are far away, giving him a person to talk to just incase.
