Due to the technology development, most of individuals are focusing on using social network technologies to communicate with each other in nowadays society. For most celebrities also will using social media to notice their information or communicate with their ‘imagined audience’. In this essay, it will distinguish with two politicians twitter language, which is Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten. This essay will analyze and evaluate how do these leaders using evaluative language to position themselves and in relation to their particular ‘imagined audience’. Turnbull’ is the term that most commonly appeared in his twitter. Shorten likes to judgment and appreciate Turnbull’s content. For example, in Shorten’s twitter, he said that ‘Today, Mr. Turnbull decided to put his own political future ahead of Australia’s future’ (Shorten, 20th Mar, 2016) and ‘Today we saw Mr. Turnbull at his trickiest - this is a plan for higher taxes and harsher cuts’ (Shorten, 29th Mar, 2016). Moreover, Shorten also commonly mention about the topic of labor, he said that ‘The choice is clear - Labor putting people first, or a Liberal Party leaving people behind as it’s always done’ (Shorten, 20th Mar, 2016). Through by his twitter, can clearly know that his policy for upcoming federal election is facing for labor, the ‘imagined audience’ for him was focusing on labor. The term of imagined audience can be defined as ‘the mental conceptualization of the people with whom we are communicating, our audience’ (Litt, 2012, p.g.331). Twitter user’s imagined audience included with the individuals who actual read of a tweet and the followers who leave the comment or retweet that twitter. Moreover, if the individual’s twitter account is public then anyone who with or without a Twitter account can read the site, which means they are potential audience also be included with ‘imagined audience’. The ‘Imagined Audience’ language can show up with naming, such as ‘Vale Bob Ellis. A brilliant writer, a wicked wit, a true believer with every fibre of his being.
