In paragraph 17 she describes one of the lonely women, and she appears to be have an exquisite lifestyle by seeing her “crystal chandelier in the dining room and matching Chinese lamps… [her] six cats, some Siamese, others Angora and Abyssinian… [her] African violets, a Ficus tree, a palm, and geraniums in season.” During the day she seems to live a successful and fulfilling life, but in the night she shows her true self by staying up late, watching the television, alone. The description of this character’s surroundings seems like something that many people would want, but she doesn’t enjoy it as much.
The book uses short sentences and different colour schemes to help the reader understand the theme of the book, and pictures to help the reader emphasize with the Numbats. The colour scheme of The Rabbits is very distinct and helps readers to understand the feelings of the Numbats. The book starts off with rather bright colours, showing that the invasion by the rabbits is not apparent, and that the numbats do not feel too bad about the rabbits yet. Later in the book, the colour scheme becomes darker, as if the numbats are shrouded in darkness, and the pictures don’t seem as bright, showing that the invasion is now well on its way, and that the numbats are scared.
Nurse Ratched’s desire for control, in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, allows her to manipulate the entire hospital ward into believing her work is for the betterment of the patients. Significantly, Nurse Ratched appears doll-like: hair in a tight bun, a neatly pressed uniform, and “too-red” lipstick (48). Traditionally, dolls, like other toys, are made to occupy the unruly minds of young children. By comparing Nurse Ratched to a child’s toy, Kesey implies she is a mere distraction to the patients from their mental impairments.
Imagine being involved in the world's largest mass murder, or even taking part in the process. This horrifying tragedy took place between 1939-1945. The books Maus, by Art Spiegelman and Night, by Elie Wiesel show many symbols to create a deeper meaning throughout the books. These sad books also portray a solid image of what it is like to be involved in the Holocaust. Maus and Night have a very similar tone that shows exactly how the Jews felt during this time.
“The top half of Joan’s house caught fire and burned while she slept downstairs. The microwave and television melted into lumps as smooth and shiny as beach rocks. She woke up to make herself a cup of tea in the morning and when she got upstairs everything was black.”(pg. 50) The first line of Lisa Moore’s hyperreal short story from “Degrees of Nakedness”, exposes the vulnerability of Joan’s house reflecting the resident inside; how the resting nature of mild-mannered people can be burning upstairs, ready to collapse at any moment.
1. Shortly after arriving on the island, Ralph and Piggy discover a conch in the water. Ralph blows the conch to announce his location so the boys can gather. From the first use of the conch, it signifies the unity of the boys because it is what brought them together. The conch is also used to maintain organization.
Sciences and technologies have improved many aspects of human lives. But as technologies are developing to be more and more advanced, science can be a deadly subject to us as well. Some writers have taken this idea and expanded on this theme of how science is deadly. In this essay I will discuss how this theme is explored in the texts: the novel Unwind written by Neal Shusterman, the film Gattaca directed by Andrew Niccol, following the short texts There Will Come Soft Rains and The Veldt written by Ray Bradbury. Science is supposed to help humans to understand more about the world and improve people’s lives.
Because the hospital ward, in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, complies with the restrictions of Nurse Ratched, McMurphy is seen as a manipulative instigator. Nevertheless, rebellion, such as McMurphy’s, is required for the powerless to free themselves from damaging constraints. Particularly, as Bromden realizes his increasing mental clarity (e.g. his improved sight), he gazes out the hospital window. Because the glass is covered with a metal mesh, Kesey implies McMurphy’s rebellious nature plants the seed for the patients’ freedom. At the window, Bromden notices, he “still had [his] eyes shut…like [he] was scared to look outside” (141).
The word cage suggested unable to do something, animal-like, and powerless to break free; it expressed a morose and abhorrent feeling that showed Collier’s intense opinion. Another use of diction
In the story, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The narrator develops an uncontrollable obsession with this yellow wallpaper as she is deemed crazy and is confined to a large nursery room where she is constantly being medicated and forced to rest. Throughout the story she writes in her secret journal where in each entry she describes her feelings towards both John and the yellow wallpaper. In the beginning she has a very negative attitude against the wallpaper and is constantly remarking it's horrible markings and it's very shade of color. Throughout the story however, her feelings dramatically change as she starts observing the wallpaper and each mark, and analysing everything from the odor that has spread throughout the house, to the hidden figure trapped behind the wall. Near the end of the story, she starts seeing more and more of the hidden figure and making out details of the trapped woman, but then goes crazy as she sees her crawling around the yard and then believes she is that
Chopin’s focuses were to show through these objects and literary symbols, the social injustices that women were going through. “The Awakening” begins with a parrot in a cage, which is supposed to be a representation of women of that time period. Just like parrots, women were annoying and were only displayed for their beauty. Moreover, women were trapped in cages which caused them to not be free. Since women were not free they remained trapped and imposed to the roles that society had labeled and stereotyped them to be.
In her society, it is the woman that is left to be alone in her own thoughts, shown through her husband’s freedom to leave the house and not come back until he wants to versus her confinement to the house. This is reflected through the various “hedges and walls and gates that lock”, making her stay isolated in the house. Ultimately, the character is overtaken by the imagination and through the

He creates a playful tone towards the harsh environment described in the short story. He describes the lifelike house as if it were a simple minded living being. For example he gave the house features of repetition and used phrases like, “it repeated the date three times for memory 's sake!”. His choice of words are charming and lighthearted rather than unpleasant to the ear. He continues to use these such words throughout even when he begins to talk of the sick scene.
He employs kinesthetic and organic images in “swollen legs, moving with fear” (5). He is trying to depict the feelings of the Jews in the ghetto before the raid. They were always afraid of being captured. Their life was controlled by other people and this is one of the reasons why they now suffer from complex trauma. Furthermore, he uses an auditory image in “The shouts of the Raiders, enjoying the hunt” (8).
