Brent Staples, in the article “Just Walk On By” claims that there is a growing amount of a racist stereotype that whites, specifically white woman, have against black males. Staples supports his claims by using his own past experience evoking certain emotions of the audience. The author purpose is to retell his experiences of racism and to educate white people about what it is to be a white man, in order to really make them see how they are misjudged just by the occasion based on appearances. The author writes in a fairly calm tone towards his audience in this case, of whites of all social classes, specifically women. Staples use of pathos, diction, and ethos to effectively join his ideas to the thoughts and attitudes of his audience in his collective article.
When discussing race, we must discuss racism which, as viewed by Revise Sociology, is “discriminatory treatment and inequitable opportunities, based on race” (RS 1). In order to fully understand what that last sentence means, we have to understand what discrimination is. Discrimination is the denial of rights, opportunities and privileges to members of certain racial and ethnic groups (UMN 2). The final two terms we need to understand before evaluating the film The Essential Blue Eyed, is prejudice and stereotyping. Prejudice is the set of negative attitudes, and beliefs towards certain categories of people or certain individuals within certain categories.
EXAMPLE: Skeeter’s mom is pressured by the Women’s League into firing her maid of more than twenty years, Constantine. Skeeter’s mom had come to love Constantine and Constantine’s daughter, yet the Women’s League expected her to treat black maids and visitors as inferior. The Women’s League seemed shocked that any white person would have an attachment to a black maid; this shows their fearful reaction to equality between races.
In the book, there are significant racial tensions and racial divisions in society. Young Black women like Lauren, the primary character, must find their way in a society where they face prejudice and marginalization. In the story, racism is shown as a persistent menace in a society where one's character or aptitudes are more often evaluated than the color of one's skin. Unfortunately, this is a problem that persists in modern culture. The work emphasizes the consequences of institutionalized racism, which persists today.
In the story “ On the Subway” the reader can identify that the narrator, the lady, is racist by noticing that the story uses allusion. For example, the lady says, “ I must profit from his darkness, the way he absorbs the murderous beams of the nation’s heart.” This is a refers to slavery which shows the reader that the lady is antiblack. Imagery is widely used in the story to show the reader the differences between the black boy and the white lady; in addition, it also shows how observant the white lady is on the black guy because she thinks she is going to get robbed or possibly killed. The lady describes the boy’s “black sneakers laced with white in a complex pattern like a set of intentional scars.”
The Blind Side is explored and defined through several different messages. Views on race are examined and thoroughly described through the sociological concepts; Minority group, racial minority group, prejudice, stereotypes and differential in power. Throughout the entire movie an example that was presented in a sociological perspective is minority group; Experiences systematic advantages and has visible identifying trait. The group is self- conscious, and membership is usually determined at birth (Healey, Pg.9).

Overall, this film has provided me with a visual depiction of how stereotypes are a mental tool that enforces racial segregation and self-hate. The label of “White” became a necessity for Sarah Jane to achieve in society. To attain it she needed to move to a new city, change her name and deny her mother.
The Blind Side is an award-winning Hollywood film and a perfect example of yet another white saviour film created by Hollywood. Though it is important to acknowledge this movie is based on a true story, the movie revolves around the experience of the Touhy family, specifically Leigh Anne Touhy rather than the experience of Michael Oher. Michael is a homeless black boy that gets adopted into the Touhy family and becomes a football star yet in this film, is overshined by Leigh Anne’s character. In addition to this, the movie also fails to address the issue of race directly and creates a binary within white people, creating only the good and the bad. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
