The Story of an Hour Mrs. Louise Mallard is the protagonist in The story of An Hour and is given the news of her husband’s death. The story of An Hour is written by Kate Chopin and was published in 1894. The story takes place prior to the ratification of the nineteenth amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920. In this time women had few rights and no sense of identity without her husband which plays an important role in the story. Similar to most women in the late 1800s, Mrs.Mallard was oppressed by her husband, disease,and by the laws of society.
