In response to “The Man We Carry in Our Minds”, having a different point of view after discovering what I woman actually goes through in life can be related to a life situation. A man always put a title on what I woman can or can not do. I believe a woman can perform any work that the mankind has placed together rather it is welding, cutting grass, or driving truck. No man should label a woman wellbeing. The purpose of the story was to show how man stereotypes a woman.
Women today, even though do have the opportunity to work, are pushed to be stay at home moms and clean while the man is the breadwinner of the home. Woman are also expected to present themselves in a certain way in society such as Paikea had to present herself as a girl and not as the future chief. Woman must carry themselves and certain way and only pursue hobbies and interests that fit what the idea of society views females doing. As soon as the story begins the scene is immediately set for a very deep and devastating event to take place. Through the word choices in the beginning we can really grasp the sensitive nature of the events that are about to unfold in front of us. Kate Chopin makes the reader recognize how Mrs. Mallard doesn’t just have a heart condition she is afflicted with it, the heart can be seen as ones emotional core which this can be foreshadowing of her marriage. In the time period in when this novel was written the mold for women was that the women would stay at home and tend to the children, cook, and clean.
Women were stereotyped by not having the ability to be independent. They were not allowed to have the same roles as men, instead they were controlled by men. In the story, Breaking Tradition Ernst states, people in “polite society” demanded that ladies live under the guidance and protection of fathers, husbands, or other male relatives” (Ernst P2). Women were told what their life would consist of.
The writings of Kate Chopin and Willa Cather can lead readers to interpret that the lives of women in the late 1800s were very unfulfilling, given the restricting Victorian ideals they were expected to follow. For example, in Chopin’s story “A Pair of Silk Stockings”, it is stated that “The needs of the present absorbed her (Mrs. Sommers) every faculty. A vision of the future like some dim, gaunt monster sometimes appalled her, but luckily tomorrow never comes” (505). Mrs. Sommers never seems to have time to think about her own desires and aspirations; so when given the opportunity, she binges to temporarily fulfill this. By writing this, Chopin wants the readers to infer that the daily tasks of the average woman in the 1800s, were a huge barricade
During her time, a woman was not allowed to have a huge voice in the society, as women are perceived to be the weaker ones from the men. With that perspective in mind, she transformed to something that every other women found impossible to do in the society that they live in. She shows that women can stand up in a society no matter what obstacle they may have encountered. She showed that women are as powerful as the man are and share many of the same strengths as them as well. She shows that a woman can work in a labor factory just like man, and can stand her own ground in the factory when she knows something does not feel right.
She noticed that she is about to receive full freedom and woman independence because husband no longer lived to tell her what to do or how to do things. Chopin reveals the story through a narrator's voice. The narrator knows,
Chopin’s focuses were to show through these objects and literary symbols, the social injustices that women were going through. “The Awakening” begins with a parrot in a cage, which is supposed to be a representation of women of that time period. Just like parrots, women were annoying and were only displayed for their beauty. Moreover, women were trapped in cages which caused them to not be free. Since women were not free they remained trapped and imposed to the roles that society had labeled and stereotyped them to be.
When I first saw the tittle of this short story, I didn’t realize how important it was. In colonial times woman were treated as lower than men, like we were just there to clean up their mess, but we aren’t. Woman have a purpose and it’s a lot more than men gave us credit for back then. In this generation of people we are so lucky not to have sexism as often as it was back then. Now, women of all races can show themselves for who they really are and get credit for the things they do.
When her husband walked through the front door she was so overcome with sadness that her heart couldn’t take it so she died.
