“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” (Ali). Muhammad Ali said these words before his fight with Sonny Liston in 1964. He was a boxer from 1960-1981 and a social activist from 1966-1967. Ali was one of the greatest boxers ever; he had over 56 wins, 5 losses, and 37 knockouts. He is essential to history and should be celebrated during black history month because he is a great inspiration for people who want to be boxers. Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the firstborn of two children he and his brother Rahman Ali. While boxing he was also a political and social activist. He is important to black history month because he received a liberty medal for humanitarian causes, civil rights, and religious freedom. What Muhammad Ali did that was important to black history month is that he showed that black people can be good at lots of things. A very famous quote that Muhammad Ali had was “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Ali is a great inspiration for people who want to be boxers. When Ali retired from boxing in 1981 he merely focused on religion, philanthropy, and activism. Before Ali died he was living near Phoenix, Arizona. Then on June 3, 2016, he died of septic shock at the age of 74 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is one of the many athletic black people and he had an effect on black history through his boxing and being an activist so that is why he is essential to black history month. I’ve learned lots of things about Muhammad Ali. I learned that Muhammad Ali had dyslexia which I never knew. He also had over 56 wins and 5 losses which shows how great of a fighter he was. Luckily his dyslexia didn’t affect his fighting, just his ability to read and write because it scrambles the words when you look at them. I also learned what he died of and when he died because I thought he was still alive. I also never knew that he had a brother or any siblings at
