Mulan: Comparing The Book And Movie

In the movie there were a lot of things that differed from the book. Some of the differences were between the training, family, and the battles. Both times Mulan is an excellent warrior and also a woman. Of course in Old China, being a woman in battle was strictly prohibited. This paper will discus some of these differences. The training in the book was quite extensive. Learning how to live off of the land and nature. In the book it talks about how Mulan practically flies up to the mountain. This is where she meets two old people who prepare her for her upcoming battles, not only mentally, but also physically. However in the movie there was no mountains, no old people to train her, no tigers, and no self-sacrificing rabbits. In the movie it was about finding a husband and honoring the family. There was very little training in this movie. There were a few scenes where we saw Mulan progress in strength, but we hardly see her actually train. Also in the movie her family was less proud of her. In the movie Mulan’s parents just want to get her out of their hair, she was always breaking things and being clumsy. So when she went to see The Match Maker she was told she would never bring honor to the family. Heartbroken and feeling alone Mulan wallows in self-pity. In the book version Mulan finally mets her husband, and then she gets pregnant during the war. She keeps the baby tucked underneath her armor until he gets too big. At that point she has her husband take the baby home with him, so she can finish out the war. In the book however the men weren’t as kind to Mulan when they found out she was a woman. Heck, Mulan wasn’t even a general! She was just another “man” on the field. The only reason general Shang even spared her life, was because Mulan had done the same for him only moments
