In this section, discuss the research question(s) or hypotheses presented in the article. • There were two research questions presented in the article. The first question was how much variation in counselors’ self-reported multicultural counseling competencies is accounted for by a set of demographic, experiential, and training variables. The second question was how multicultural training explains additional variations in multicultural counseling competencies after accounting for the variation in competencies due to demographic and experiential variables. The purpose of the study/research problem was clearly identified within these two questions. They were first presented in the introduction to the study which was very helpful. The individuals used in the sample were all vocational rehabilitation counselors What were the independent/predictor and dependent/criterion variables? Was the IV manipulated? • The independent/predictor variables were the three variable sets reflecting counselors background characteristics, multicultural life and professional experience, and multicultural training. The Multicultural Counseling Inventory (MCI) total score was used as the dependent/criterion variable. Comment on reliability and validity issues related to the instruments if appropriate. • According to the article there is research that demonstrates adequate reliability and validity for the MCI. It adequately measures multicultural competencies. Comment on any threats to internal or external validity: subject bias, research bias, etc. • The percentage of the sample who participated in the study appeared to be a threat. Out of the 372 questionnaires sent out only 175 were usable. This was not fifty percent of the sample and could have caused a response bias. Multicultural concerns have been increasingly relevant as demographics change and continue to increase. Counselors are expected to develop a multicultural awareness of clients from cultures different within their own. What did this article present that will help you in preparing your research study for this course, and how is it relevant to you as a counselor? • This article presented me with an outline that could potentially be helping in preparing my research study for this course. I was able to objectively review a research highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. I will take my findings and use as a resource when preparing my research.
