If a school consists of only one type of race or ethnic group, then the students are isolated to the ideals of that specific community. But if diversity exists, the opportunity arises to learn about different cultures and become more well-rounded. This is illustrated by Owen and his best friend Dave, who is white. Even though Owen and Dave are two different races, they do not let that prevent them from being friends. They use their differences as an advantage to learn from each other and to help each other out.
Chapter three’s main focus was to break down and take a more in depth look at the many categories of race, class, gender, and disability in the classroom and how each of them affect what we do and how our classroom operates. Although it is only the third chapter and I have many more chapters to read about multicultural education, this is certainly my favorite chapter in this book so far. I found the various examples and main points throughout the chapter to be both interesting and eye-opening. Culture is based on everything you were taught and lived through when you was growing up examples are like playing sports, being respectful to others, being taught from what is right and what is wrong. Culture impacts our lives in many ways and in different circumstances. I strongly agree that culture will be a part of everyone 's lives for generations.
When people think of serial offenders, often the first to come to mind is serial killers and possibly sex offenders. Although an admittedly difficult topic, the author strives to help the reader understand the problem of diversity in our schools and the ways in which our approach to educating multiracial students can help or hinder students. Culture is what everyone has and it makes everyone unique and different. Some start to educate themselves on their own culture based on what they see around them. Others learn from their parents like being taught a language then later in life they can speak it fluently. Learning early places them in a group of people with similar cultures or if their open-minded, a group with people of different cultures. In texts “Multiculturalism explained in one word: HAPA”, “What is cultural identity?”, and Two kinds, it shows how culture affects how one would view the world.
Every day we use our culture. Whether it be to argue claims, express opinions, or make decisions, culture plays a part in each area. Culture is who we are, one’s identity, its extent is enormous over our views and actions. A person grows up surrounded with culture at a young age. This can affect how they learn and what they learn.
Moreover, Sutton, a former student and current principal at an Alabama high school, has learned with his years of experience that “‘Once another race tend to be around another race, that would tend to give them a different perspective’” (Morris, 12). Diversity is key to helping students develop into understanding humans are all different and become more aware of the world and cultures around them. According to the article “The Importance of Diversity in Books”, Dilloway, an author of middle-school level texts, states how “it’s also important to read about other peoples experiences, and understand what it's like to walk around in their skin” (Prescott 1). Diversity in books exposes children to learn about people who might be different from them and step into someone else’s shoes. This helps them show the challenges and problems other people have that they might not face.
The author describes how America is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, and there is a need to educate students on cultural diversity. The author identifies that there should be an authentic cultural educational experiences and not stereotypes. The education should have value and not be token placements. It’s imperative that the classroom offers literature, and visuals that exhibit diversity. The article discuses how students can learn to ensure that students are learning that education in multicultural diversity is best introduced to children at a young age.
As Gay (2010) states, although cultural diversity is seen as a positive and valuable in theory, it is often seen as a threat and tried to be eliminated in real life; and because of this reason teachers mostly deal with aspects of cultural diversity that won’t cause trouble for them. However, I believe that if a person chooses to be a teacher he / she has to have some responsibility to the society to be genuinely sensitive about these issues and has to act to promote acceptance of cultural diversity both in the society and in the education area.

Culture is the building block for life. It sets society's standards, it sets our own standards, and everything we know is all because of our culture. Culture is a way of thinking, a way of behaving and learning. We express our opinions based upon our beliefs, and define ourselves by what aspects of our culture we choose to show. Culture's impact on someone's perspective of others and the world is greater than its other influencers because it can change how you interact with people, your ability to change, and your opinions of the world.
I am interested in diversity for my storybook. The theme “diversity” is important for children to live in diversity world. Diversity is better to learn as soon as possible from children because the rejection about differences is hard to change after the segregation is formed in mind. Most children are built the images about the different ethnicities by what they read, see and hear. Since people’s perspective is formed when they are little, how parents educate children is important.
To resolve these relating to segregation and educational inequity, educators must face racism upfront. Educators have to confront their own, sometimes unmindful, racism, and then move toward integration that will lead to a better cure of racism or at least a prejudice reduction. Important aspects of a multicultural curriculum include critical thinking, emotional intelligence instruction, character, moral education, peace education, service learning, antiviolence education, and the comprehensive of education etc. Sandra Parks, a successful educator, believes that by adapting the curriculum and by addressing expressions of racism, schools can help students improve to by understanding and dealing with other people, of peoples color and cultural differences. She believes that teachers have to show respect towards their students, their families, and their students' cultural backgrounds.
