After reading the passage “Multitasking or Mass ADD?” by Ellen Goodman I am assured of a few things in which I feel that I have known all along. There are many reasons why I always felt that multitasking was a myth. When multitasking is the point of an operation there may be a more quantities of work accomplished but there will never be more quality of work performed when practicing multitasking. I did some research about this subject of multitasking which led me to even more troubling news. Multitasking as most individuals think of it is actually a myth. Most people feel that they are actually focusing on several things at the same time when they are at their usual multitasking peak. Yet this has also led to a lesser quality of work being performed as well as products being produced within as well as out of our society. For example, the standard for producing a certain amount of Bar-b-que grills in one hour has been raised from 20 to 30 grills. So there is a 10% gain in production which provides the opportunity to sell that many more grills within that hour. Now the problem arises with the customer’s satisfaction because there are parts missing that were a part of the advertisement which is a vital part of customer service. Now the customer feels they didn’t receive the product that they thought they were purchasing, so the next time they are out looking for a product, or even recommending a product to a friend they may not attend or recommend your store. This can lead to a drastic fall in sales as more and more customers feel they were given or sold a poor quality product. So in this case you can lose money as well as customers just as fast and in some cases maybe even quicker than you gain
