Australia is a country that has been described as diverse, multi-cultural and unique. Our cultural history are different to anywhere else, which has most definitely captured the attention of the rest of the world portrayed throughout Australian films, such as The Castle (1997) and Muriel’s Wedding (1994). Australian society has evolved in a very short period of time from the earliest convict settlements established in the late 18th century, to the cosmopolitan cultures that currently exist and attract immigrants from all continents across the globe. This is another aspect of national identity that is proven in the 1994 Australian film Muriel’s Wedding. Muriel’s Wedding is about a young woman is not considered one of the pretty girls of the town and is bullied by the more ‘beautiful’ women of the town. As the movie continues, you discover the true identity of the Aussie woman Muriel. As she reveals her inner-self she comes to realize that she can have a good time, be valued and make true loyal friends by being herself and not hoping that she will become a different person in a better life. Being able to accept another person for who or what they are, whether they be coloured, or of different heritage, this is perhaps one of the most significant quality of our national identity. Throughout the film Muriel’s Wedding people start to accept Muriel for who she is and stop stereotyping her because she is not ‘as pretty’ as them and that means that she will not get married. However Muriel proves them wrong once again. The film also reveals that Aussie people will tell everyone the truth no matter what. ‘I'll tell you. I'm honest.
