As Murray Goldberg, played by Jeff Garlin, flops into his recliner and exclaiming his children are “Morons!”, an instant wave of nostalgia and comedy rushes over the audience as that one utterance can hit home for so many. reminiscent of the 1980’s, The Goldbergs provides the audience a comedic respit from the over-saturated drama and action film production market. From the teased hair, classic 80’s music, scrunchies, and so many other subtleties, the almost realistic version of The Simpsons fires synapses like pyrotechniques at a hair-band metal concert. Before you know it, all plans you had for the day have been canceled and, dedicated to The Goldbergs, you are putting on one glove and recreating awkward pogo dance moves. The Goldbergs started airing episodes on September 24, 2013, however, according to Google, new episodes are still being produced and aired today, with a rating of “94% liked this show” by Google users. While a show with a 1980’s, nuclear family setting where they are simply dealing with common issues may lack classic Michael Bay action scenes, comedy makes the show. Surprisingly, however, drama, and even action invigorate the writing of The Goldbergs, as is the case in the vast majority of families. The show highlights the pivotal moments of the historically typical western family in a humorous and familiar light. Adam F. Goldberg lived an interesting life that we can all relate to, and the show is really just highlights of the comedic and wholesome portions of his life. With inter-dimensional family views, to be able to see just how each tier of the family affects the others is also fascinating and enlightening. An example of such is when Murray’s father appears for the first time and the audience really gets to see how Murray’s father formed Murray into who he is today, and how the rest of the family can make issues worse, and/or resolve them too. These details are often underappreciated, and only bolster the quality of the show. To say that you will not binge watch an entire season after watching just one episode is the equivalent of stating that you will only eat one chip from a bag of chips.
