Have you ever wondered about the little black and white stickers on many CD covers that read “PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT CONTENT” or what about the annoying bleeps right in the middle of your favorite song that playing on the radio? Well, its called music censorship, and those little “innocent” stickers and bleeps have been a major debate in America for the past few decades. Censorship mainly started around the 1950’s when traditional and conservative values began to unravel (Weisel). The manufacturing and use of the parental advisory labels on album covers started in 1985. Censoring was and still is a huge issue because many people accuse indecent language and violence influence in music takes a huge part in tragedies all over the world (Inglis). Our country follows an elite set acts and the very first one is the freedom of speech. Amendment I sates, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”. Music censorship defies America’s first amendment. We as people or musicians have a right to say what we want to say and that should go for what musician’s decide to vocalize in their music. Censorship is ceasing that right to perform. Musicians have been fighting for freedom of speech for years.
