The 1950’s in my opinion was probably the most impactful decade on Rock music. The emergence of the crossovers was probably the best thing to happen in the music scene thus creating rock and roll. The social impact of music in the 1950’s specifically hit the teens appealing to their style and even expressing their frustrations. The music in the 50’s consisted of mainstream rock, rockabilly, and soft rock. Mainstream Rock was upbeat and mainly stuck to the 12-bar blues pattern. Most of the instrumentation consisted of guitars, piano, drums and saxophone.Shouters became very popular and their sound had unavoidable raspines. Rockabilly was very appealing to people and often seemed like a more “pure” form of rock music. Bill Haley laid the foundation for Rockabilly and Sam Phillips was the real center for the Rockabilly style. One of the most influential rockabilly acts of this period was the Everly Brothers. Soft rock is the third type of style in the 50’s. Soft rock consisted of a softer style of rock that combined elements of rock and pop music. Soft rock had two distinct styles, the first was white soft rock developed by Elvis, and Pat Boone. Second was black soft rock developed by what we now call doo-wop groups. With rock and roll came big changes for the music industry including the majority of teens who no longer played by reading sheet music but by ear. Popular recordings were played on the radio and were no longer able to be printed in time to be published on bestselling sheet music. In comparison to the 1950’s era of fun dance music the 1980’s era of Heavy Metal was the complete opposite. Heavy Metal was the hardest of rock styles and appealed to those whose self-image was angry, macho and rebellious. Most of the fans were considered troubled and the lyrics were often about violence, suicide, and
