In the book The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, Peekay witnesses magical coincidences that were larger than life. In this section, Peekay comes home to find that Doc has been sick with a bad case of pneumonia. His pneumonia gets progressively worse until, sadly, Doc dies. After Doc’s funeral Peekay goes to the crystal caves that he and Doc had found several chapters earlier. The Tadpole Angel song represents Doc well because it shows his love of Peekay, but also his fascination with African music. The Tadpole Angel song is larger than life because of this. It represents much more than just a song. It is a song written for Peekay but the soul of the people and the heart of Doc are also represented in it. Peekay has also shared a magical relationship with the people. They are the ones who gave him the name of “Tadpole Angel”. And when Peekay is put to the test to fight Gideon Mandoma, he does not disappoint them. ”’You are the great chief, you are he who is Onoshobishobi Ingelosi,’ Mandoma said, and, standing on still trembling legs, he held up my hand. The crowd went wild” (432). The people show Peekay great respect because they see him as a chief. The people see Peekay as more than just a teenager. “‘This is very powerful among the People. The People see you box only against the Boer, and always you are winning. The People think you are a great chief of their tribe. The Sotho think this, the Shangaan think this, the Zulu also, all the people”
