Music Philosophy Statement

As musicians, we strive for those magical moments when we are performing when the hair on the back of our neck stands on end and we can’t help relish in the moment. We live for the moments when we see tears in an audience member’s eyes or a big smile on their face. Music is a powerful force that affects every person in some way, and to play a part in making music is something beautiful. Music has the ability to stir up emotions within a person. It brings people together, and is simply exciting to be involved with. I grew up surrounded by music. While my parents are not musicians, they had always played music in our house. When I was five years old, I took dance lessons and would dance to a variety of styles. I started piano lessons when I was eight years old, and percussion a year later. Up until high school, playing and listening to music, and attending performances were just fun things to do. My main goal as a music teacher is to make music a fun and positive experience for all students, while still ensuring students are learning the fundamentals. I want to create a safe and fun environment for my students. I want them to be able to make music, and to enjoy themselves at the same time. Every child is capable of succeeding in the classroom, and as teacher, I must give every student the tools they need to succeed. Most importantly, I will always self-reflect and experiment with new and effective ways to teach. I would consider myself a successful teacher if my students wanted to continue to be involved in music in some way once I am no longer their teacher. I know I can incorporate a healthy balance in my classroom and in my curriculum where my students are developing musical skills and gaining knowledge while still enjoying
