REVIEW QUESTIONS:
1. Some basic elements of music are pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, melody, harmony, and form.
2. The pitch is how high or low a note sounds, and is completely subjective based off the person and where they are compared to where the sound originated from.
3. Syncopation occurs when emphasis is placed on a beat where it wouldn’t normally be and vice versa. Syncopation can commonly be found in genres like jazz, reggae, dupstep, and some metal.
4. The common meter is one musical form, it uses four lines where their ends rhyme. A concerto is another musical form, in this form a solo is accompanied by an orchestra. A symphony is yet another form where a piece is played by an orchestra.

You don’t need to speak Italian to understand the emotions of a sad love song at the opera, and you don’t need to be Austrian to be moved by Mozart. One of the most beautiful things about music is its way of crossing language barriers and the planet. Because of this music can sometimes be the universal language, and I couldn’t agree with that sentiment more. For example my friend Emilie was a K-pop fan before it was cool (before gangnam style), and I’m a J-rock/J-pop fan among other things.
2. Musical notation is kind of like musical shorthand, and can convey several different nuances without cluttering the page with long drawn out sentences. Musical notation can tell the musicians the pitch, tempo, and dynamics of the piece.
3. Music acts as a constant background noise, think about it when it’s not there we often think something is wrong. In a movie or a TV show music can help set the pace and the mood, for example what would a car chase be without the loud fast paced music, what about a tragic scene without rain and a low slow song, or Kirk punching an alien without all those classic over stated and high pitched whines. Other places where we place music so that there aren’t any awkward pauses are elevators and hold music, without elevator music we would be forced to talk to the people around us to fill the silence, and without the often annoying or too loud hold music we’d probably hang up.
