Music Therapy (Final Paper) For my final paper, I have chosen the subject of “Music Therapy” and how music can be used not only for pleasure and entertainment, but it also contains vast healing properties and is crucial to human development. Why should we rely strictly on pharmacology as the main source of healing when there are various natural remedies that can heal just as well? We should not limit ourselves strictly by following a set of pre-determined parameters, but be open to new ideas and really start to think “outside of the box”. The young boy stated his pain level was at an “8” (which on a scale of 10 was fairly high) and you could tell he was sick from the radiation treatments he was receiving, after the therapy session he was asked again how he felt and he responded with a resounding “More, More, I want to hear More!” The nurse asked him what his pain level was after the session and he quickly responded with the number three. Think about that, going from an eight to a three on the pain scale is significant. I also noticed the child was much happier and more upbeat in his demeanor. I can personally attest to the healing powers that music can bring. Music therapy interventions can be designed to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication, and promote physical rehabilitation (Duerksen,2014). The practice of music therapy (while still new) is spreading worldwide. Its success as a valid medical treatment grows by the day. Everyday science is introducing new and emerging findings in this field. We have only scratched the surface as to how music can be used to treat various diseases. “Music Therapy is a deep commitment to music and the desire to use it as a medium to help others” (Smith,Patey,2003 p.5) One must be passionate about music and willing to explore and go deeper than the average Joe to look for a new method to heal others in a non-conventional way. To me, that’s what makes this profession so intriguing, as the practitioner must be passionate and willing to explore deeper into how music traverses through each person's own understanding of it. In other words, no two treatment sessions are never the same each case would be challenging and exciting all that the same time.
