Music has been an important element of Brazil for decades because it allows Brazilians to celebrate life and inspire happiness. All types of Brazilian music genres have a distinct and rich history. In the Brazilian culture there are multiple types of diverse and unique types of music styles. Some types of music remain distinct and unique, while others have influenced modern music and performance to a certain degree. Boosa nova, Forro, and Musica Sertaneja are all three types of music that had an influence in Brazil.
Beginning on the tropical beaches of Rio de Janiero in the late 1950s was the music style of Boosa Nova. This style was formed by mostly young people because they choose to compose more positive music to describe their generation instead of the suffering in the rhythm and lyrics from the past decades. The Boosa Nova is known as a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian music and rhythms. The typical instruments you would hear in this music style is the classical guitar, piano, electronic organ, acoustic bass and drums. Boosa Nova found worldwide fame and can be related to well-known musicians such as Joao Gilberto, Vinicus de Moraes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Luiz Bonfa. This genre began very simple with only three instruments; the triangle, accordion, and the zambuma. Originally, the lyrics written in this genre were about life in the rural North- East Brazil such as concerns about droughts or migration to look for work. In the more recent genre of Forro, the lyrics can relate to life of a young urbanized middle class or also about love and romance.
