Muslims made lasting contributions in every field of science that we incorporated into our daily lives. In the 800s, the Golden Age began. During this time, science, math, art, medicine, and many more fields were able to flourish. Despite all the achievements the Muslims made, the ones that shine the brightest were the contributions in math, medicine, and architecture. In the ninth century, Muslims mathematicians combined the Indian and Greek number system to make the modern day number system, with numbers such as ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’, and these ideas] which was subsequently used to develop algebra. Muslims would base several discoveries off of Indian and Greek ideas. Muslims doctors would establish hospitals, which were paid by the government. The hospitals were designed to have different wards, to prevent the spread of disease. The doctors treated sickness through exercise, diet, and drugs. Doctors made medicines from herbs, animals, and plants. Doctors also made anesthetics and antiseptics. This would be very valuable, especially during surgeries, when the patient would experience large amounts of pain if not for the drugs. Al - Razi, a famous Muslim doctor, discovered that bacteria caused diseases and were able to come up with treatments for various diseases. Doctors would also make tests for other people to become doctors. Muslims were known for making “...some of their most important innovations in the field of medicine.”(Frey 112). The largest long-term impacts of these innovations would be the treatment for smallpox, the books written by doctors to help diagnose and treat ailments, such as the Canon of Medicine written by Avicenna, and the hundreds of remedies that the Muslims created.
