In my short seventeen years, I have come to realize that life presents several opportunities at any given moment. I love to reach out and take advantage of these chances, but I know that a lack of success is quite a reality. I used to view this lack of success as a failure, but the lyrics “You only fail, if you never try” changed my perspective. I can learn from mistakes and the times I do not succeed. Today, I see only see failure if 100% effort and determination was absent and resulted in unmet expectations. My ambition has always been strong, but The Afters’ song lyrics further cemented my drive to persevere through any obstacles. I acknowledge that my experience level compared to my teammates is inferior, since my playing history dates back to only five years ago. I have worked tenaciously to play my best at every game and practice for the past four years in which I have been a member of both the varsity and junior varsity teams. With that, my minutes in varsity games are also minimal, but I still work to keep my spot on the varsity team. For our senior game, though, I was one of three seniors who were not given any playing time. Despite the frustration, I showed up to practice the following day because I made a commitment to my team and myself. The lack of playing time for that particular game was deterring because I expected to play in my senior game. However, I realized I was not playing at a high enough level to register on my coach’s radar during practices and the games prior. From this experience, I have moved past the game and decided to keep working through the rest of this season to play to the best of my ability and support my team as we move on to the playoffs in the coming
