They say that the best to learn about someone is to learn about where they are from. Everyone has situations they have overcame, a cultural and familial background that shapes who they are. No one is alike even though we may have the same outer appearances. I am who I am because of my family, friends, and experiences that I have been through. I am a 1st generation Haitian American born to two Haitian immigrants who came to America during the early 1980’s. My parents grew up two different ways in their native land. My dad was born into a slightly privileged family with his dad being a pharmacist and his mom being a teacher. I am originally from Lauderhill, Florida and throughout elementary and middle school I was ashamed of telling people that I was Haitian due to the stereotypes that were prevalent during the time. However, it was easy making friends with people who were from the same cultural background with me and we ended up sticking together. Sexual orientation is viewed from a traditional perspective where a man and female are made to be with each other. Same sex attraction is frowned upon. My family had a big impact on my attitude towards sexuality. Even to this day sometimes I tend to lean towards their view of sexual orientation, but I always try to catch myself and remember that God loves everyone and I shouldn’t have dislike toward someone because of their sexual orientation.
