On the 13th of September 1775, Elizabeth Ingersoll gave birth to Laura Ingersoll, a clever, beautiful baby. When Laura was eight, her mother died, leaving her and her three sisters, Myra, Abigail and Elizabeth. Her father remarried twice and had two children, named Nancy and Charles with his third wife. Her family was originally from Massachusetts, so in 1795 her family immigrated to Upper Canada where her father had obtained a township grant for settlement. Her father’s farm became the site of the modern town of Ingersoll.
Isabella Baumfree, now known as Sojourner Truth, was born into slavery in 1797, though her birthdate was not recorded. Isabella Baumfree protested when John Dumont , Isabella Baumfree 's previous owner whom she ran away from, sold her son, Peter, to a family in Alabama. Two white lawyers, whom we don 't know the name of, in New York gave Baumfree free legal help and liberated Peter through the courts. Sojourner Truth moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1857 and became active there helping black people escape on the Underground Railroad to freedom.

Sister Serena, the last of the five Williams sisters, was born in September 1981. In the book My Antonia, the characters developed a lot throughout the story, but one character development that stood out to me was Antonia Shimerda. Antonia's character developed so much in this novel, she becomes a more independent character, but that's only because of the challenges she faced when she moved from Bohemia, her dad committed suicide, she had to work as a servant girl and when her fiancé left her. In the beginning of the novel, Antonia and her family are welcomed into Nebraska. They stay next to Jim Burden and his grandparents, they are the ones who welcomed them.
During the time of the salem witch trials and the late 1980’s-1990’s during baseball's Steroid Era were two different things, but they also had one thing in common the hysteria that was brought by both of these. In the witch trials there were many of people dying and in baseball there was various amounts of people getting suspended and their chances at the hall of fame forever destroyed. As it was her goal to take her music across all barriers, she knew she had to master the language if she wanted to make a difference (Marvis 12). She could sing in Spanish with the help of her father, but when it came to talking in press conferences and with others, she had difficulty with the language. She did not let her mistakes discourage her from trying to speak the language. Instead, she often laughed off her mistakes in Spanish interviews and never gave up trying to master the language (López 13).

One of her first accomplishments was when it came for high school graduation she was valedictorian, somewhat of a shocker for many due to the fact she was an African American in the 19th century, they were not expected to progress much in life. Following that she later attends college graduating in 1895, being one of the many few woman to graduate in this time as well.
Even though surfing requires a lot of balance and effort, Bethany Hamilton was able to stand up on her board with one arm after getting attacked by a shark. Bethany Hamilton was born in Lihue, Hawaii on February 8, 1990. She was a competitive surfer by age eight (Hamilton 49). The reason why Bethany is so competitive is because she has two brothers who motivated her to try harder and to be the best (Hamilton 35). Bethany always said, “You know it would take a lot to keep me from surfing” (Hamilton 49).
Immigrants do not always know what they are in for when coming to a new place. In Willa Cather’s novel My Antonia, a bohemian immigrant girl learns what it is to be a pioneer. When Antonia and her family come to America they do not speak english very well so she tries very hard to learn.
In My Antonia, Willa Cather pens a nostalgic story focused on a two people with a unique connection. Jim Burden narrates the story of Antonia Shimerda, the girl next door who happens to be a Bohemian emigrant. Jim moves to his grandparents’ house after his parents die; Antonia arrives in the United States with her family and little else. The two are vastly different, but bond quickly on the Nebraska prairie. Most people who study the novel acknowledge the obvious impact that Antonia has on Jim and see Antonia as “in one way or another, the center of the novel” (Lucenti).
