On the 13th of September 1775, Elizabeth Ingersoll gave birth to Laura Ingersoll, a clever, beautiful baby. When Laura was eight, her mother died, leaving her and her three sisters, Myra, Abigail and Elizabeth. Her father remarried twice and had two children, named Nancy and Charles with his third wife. Her family was originally from Massachusetts, so in 1795 her family immigrated to Upper Canada where her father had obtained a township grant for settlement. Her father’s farm became the site of the modern town of Ingersoll.
Isabella Baumfree, now known as Sojourner Truth, was born into slavery in 1797, though her birthdate was not recorded. Isabella Baumfree protested when John Dumont , Isabella Baumfree 's previous owner whom she ran away from, sold her son, Peter, to a family in Alabama. Two white lawyers, whom we don 't know the name of, in New York gave Baumfree free legal help and liberated Peter through the courts. Sojourner Truth moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1857 and became active there helping black people escape on the Underground Railroad to freedom.

Williams was born in Lynwood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, on June 17, 1980, the fourth of five daughters born to Richard and Oracene (nicknamed Brandi) Williams. Sister Serena, the last of the five Williams sisters, was born in September 1981. Her father ran a private security firm in Compton and was a dedicated fan of tennis, who became hooked on the game by watching televised coverage of professional tournaments, told his wife that he wanted to make tennis stars out of his daughters. He had little luck with his older girls—Isha, Lyndrea, and Yetunde—none of whom showed any particular aptitude for the game. His efforts proved far more successful with Venus and Serena, both of whom turned out to be naturals on the court.
Selena's Musical Career Selena Quintanilla Pérez was a famous Mexican-American singer. Selena had an amazing career in the making. Selena sang Disco, Tejano, and Technocumbia music whenever ever she performed. Selena had it rough growing up as a singer because she was a girl.
In the book My Antonia, the characters developed a lot throughout the story, but one character development that stood out to me was Antonia Shimerda. Antonia's character developed so much in this novel, she becomes a more independent character, but that's only because of the challenges she faced when she moved from Bohemia, her dad committed suicide, she had to work as a servant girl and when her fiancé left her. In the beginning of the novel, Antonia and her family are welcomed into Nebraska. They stay next to Jim Burden and his grandparents, they are the ones who welcomed them.
During the time of the salem witch trials and the late 1980’s-1990’s during baseball's Steroid Era were two different things, but they also had one thing in common the hysteria that was brought by both of these. In the witch trials there were many of people dying and in baseball there was various amounts of people getting suspended and their chances at the hall of fame forever destroyed. Many of people know about the Salem Witch Trials as one of the most moments and years of hysteria. During this time there were many of people wrongly executed. During the 1950’s a man wrote a book called The Crucible.
In Willa Cather’s essay she unfolds Sarah Jewett’s ability to express her feeling for writing through her diction to form art. In Sarah Jewett’s novel, her feeling for writing is shown through her main character who came to New England to write her own novel. Jewett shows the struggles she feels when writing her own novels through her character. In one of the passages she writes, “Literary employments are so vexed and uncertainties at best and and it was not until the voice of conscience sounded louder in my ears than the sea on the nearest pebble beach that I said unkind words of withdrawal to Mrs. Todd”(18). Although Selena was becoming one of the most popular people in Tejano music, she still struggled with speaking Spanish. As it was her goal to take her music across all barriers, she knew she had to master the language if she wanted to make a difference (Marvis 12). She could sing in Spanish with the help of her father, but when it came to talking in press conferences and with others, she had difficulty with the language. She did not let her mistakes discourage her from trying to speak the language. Instead, she often laughed off her mistakes in Spanish interviews and never gave up trying to master the language (López 13).
“Willa Cather, writer and poet, was born in Back Creek Valley, Virginia, on December 7, 1873, the eldest of seven children raised by Charles and Virginia Cather. (Thacker, n.d.)” Throughout her life Cather achieved a lot. One of her first accomplishments was when it came for high school graduation she was valedictorian, somewhat of a shocker for many due to the fact she was an African American in the 19th century, they were not expected to progress much in life. Following that she later attends college graduating in 1895, being one of the many few woman to graduate in this time as well.
Even though surfing requires a lot of balance and effort, Bethany Hamilton was able to stand up on her board with one arm after getting attacked by a shark. Bethany Hamilton was born in Lihue, Hawaii on February 8, 1990. She was a competitive surfer by age eight (Hamilton 49). The reason why Bethany is so competitive is because she has two brothers who motivated her to try harder and to be the best (Hamilton 35). Bethany always said, “You know it would take a lot to keep me from surfing” (Hamilton 49).
Immigrants do not always know what they are in for when coming to a new place. In Willa Cather’s novel My Antonia, a bohemian immigrant girl learns what it is to be a pioneer. When Antonia and her family come to America they do not speak english very well so she tries very hard to learn.
In My Antonia, Willa Cather pens a nostalgic story focused on a two people with a unique connection. Jim Burden narrates the story of Antonia Shimerda, the girl next door who happens to be a Bohemian emigrant. Jim moves to his grandparents’ house after his parents die; Antonia arrives in the United States with her family and little else. The two are vastly different, but bond quickly on the Nebraska prairie. Most people who study the novel acknowledge the obvious impact that Antonia has on Jim and see Antonia as “in one way or another, the center of the novel” (Lucenti).

Plato's “The Apology of Socrates” is a speech Socrates makes at the trial in which he is charged with not recognizing the gods recognized by the state, inventing new idols, and corrupting the youth of Athens. Socrates' speech, however, is by no means an "apology" in our modern understanding of the word; the name of the dialogue derives from the Greek "apologia," which translates as a defense, or a speech made in defense of the convicted. Thus, in this reading, Socrates attempts to defend himself and his conduct; certainly not to apologize for it. For the most part, Socrates speaks in a very plain, conversational manner towards all his charges that Meletus and Athens has filed against him.
