Throughout high school, I was always able to obtain an A on an essay I wrote. However, after writing my first essay for my college level writing class and receiving my grade, I realized that getting an A was not going to be so simple. I was able to improve on my writing through the different types of essays I was required to write in this course. An assignment included in my portfolio is Project Space, in which I attended an off-campus event and described my experience in detail. Professor Meraz encouraged my class to learn how to take the Metro to get to these events. Another assignment in my portfolio is my Argumentative Research paper. Before writing my thesis or deciding on my topic, I did research on different topics in websites’ databases including Pew Research Center, UCLA, Tomas Rivera. To get an idea of how and what to write about, I was shown videos, and read a sample essay and a chapter of a book by Dr. Hayes-Bautista. Now, my main focus, specifically in Project Space and Project Web, was to be as descriptive as possible. An example of this was instead of writing “flowers,” I wrote the type of flowers. During class, I got in touch with my senses by walking around campus with my eyes closed, guided by a partner. By doing so, I focused more on the smells, sounds, and textures surrounding me. In addition, I have been told by my professor and tutors that I tend to be wordy. I try to fix this by reading my papers out loud and deleting and unnecessary words. Despite my weaknesses, I have learned to highlight my strengths. For example, before, my paragraphs used to be really short, but I have learned to use detail and examples to expand the number of sentences in a paragraph.
